Nike Reaches Settlement Over Lil Nas X’s Controversial ‘Satan Shoes’
Nike and MSCHF, the company that helped Lil Nas X release his controversial “Satan shoes”, have reached a settlement agreement.
The shoes had a pentagon charm with “LUKE 10:18” written on them, a scripture that speaks of Satan’s fall from Heaven. Each pair also allegedly included a drop of human blood.
According to reports, MSCHF and Nike have come to an agreement just days after the athletic apparel line filed a trademark lawsuit and a motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction.
Nike said in a statement to PEOPLE that the shoe was made “without Nike’s authorization”, adding that it wants MSCHF to recall the “Satan Shoes” as well as the “Jesus Shoes” that were released in 2019. Those sneakers had a crucifix on the laces and insoles that smelled like frankincense.
“As part of the settlement, Nike has asked MSCHF, and MSCHF has agreed, to initiate a voluntary recall to buy back any ‘Satan Shoes’ and ‘Jesus Shoes’ for their original retail prices, in order to remove them from circulation. If any purchasers were confused, or if they otherwise want to return their shoes, they may do so for a full refund.”
At the same time, if anyone who has purchased the “Satan Shoes” or “Jesus Shoes” doesn’t want to return them and later has “a product issue, defect, or health concern”, Nike wants them to reach out to MSCHF.
It ends the statement with,
“The parties are pleased to put this dispute behind them.”
The settlement comes after a judge granted Nike’s motion to stop any more of the “Satan Shoes” from being sold.
Lil Nas X expressed his disappointment in that decision on Twitter.
