Megan Thee Stallion–Black TikTok Creators Boycott ‘Thot S**t’ To Prove Their Content Is Appropriated & Hijacked
After feeling underappreciated and appropriated, many Black TikTok users are refusing to create a routine for Megan Thee Stallion‘s “Thot S**t” to make a point!
TikTok is a platform that centers on users’ utilization of the same audio to create various routines or skits. However, various Black creators’ routines and ideas have allegedly been appropriated by white TikTokers without credit. Additionally, many feel as though various white creators have gone viral for routines stolen from Black people on TikTok. Resultingly, many Black creators have decided to boycott the creation of a “Thot S**t” dance to prove their point.
It appears as though one of the first creators to call attention to the boycott was a user going by the name @theericklouis. In a video uploaded this past Saturday (June 19th), he acted as though he was going to perform a dance for the song. However, the on-screen text soon changes to read:
“Sike. This app would be nothing without Blk people.”
@theericklouisIf y’all do the dance pls tag me ? it’s my first dance on Tik tok and I don’t need nobody stealing/not crediting? Thot Shit – Megan Thee Stallion
Shortly thereafter, many other Black TikTok creators picked up on the boycott and began to satirize white creators’ dances!
@wazzamray#fyp? #dance #cantdonothingright #cantdonothing #ytpeople #blackinfluencer it saids knees y’all say hands up???? original sound – Tasia Alexis
@erykahhlike my shirt? #thotshitt #TubiTaughtMe #dance #foryoupage #fyp? Thot Shit – Megan Thee Stallion
Since the boycott gained widespread coverage, many people have expressed their support for the effort, as it shows how Black creators are consistently not given credit for their contributions to online trends.
