R. Kelly Allegedly Married Aaliyah When She Was 15 To Help Her Get An Abortion
The alleged reasoning behind R. Kelly‘s infamous 1994 marriage to Aaliyah is being brought up at the disgraced singer’s trial.
Yesterday (Monday, Aug. 23rd), a Jane Doe took the stand at R. Kelly‘s highly-anticipated sex trafficking trial. During her testimony, the unidentified woman claimed R. Kelly admitted to marrying Aaliyah when she was 15 to help her get an abortion, as only parents and spouses were able to permit minors to get abortions at the time. R. Kelly was 27–12 years older than Aaliyah— when they illegally married in 1994.
The Jane Doe will continue providing her testimony in court later today (Tuesday, Aug. 24th).
The allegations levied against R. Kelly align with claims made by the prosecutors in the case. As previously reported, Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez alleged R. Kelly married Aaliyah after she got pregnant to prevent her from filing sexual misconduct charges against him.
Additionally, these claims come after his former tour manager, Demetrius Smith, took the stand and admitted he knew about the pair’s relationship at the time. Demetrius Smith testified that, while he knew the relationship was wrong, he ultimately kept quiet about it to stay on R. Kelly‘s good side. He claimed:
“I just wanted to stay in the loop.”
Demetrius Smith also admitted to procuring a fake ID for Aaliyah by paying a court clerk $500 to officiate the marriage to R. Kelly.
