R. Kelly’s Lawyer Confirms The Singer Had A Sexual Relationship W/ Aaliyah When She Was Underage, Backtracks In Court

R. Kelly has recently opened up about the specifics of his relationship with Aaliyah after decades of speculation.

As you may recall, R. Kelly illegally married Aaliyah on August 31st, 1994. Despite claiming she was 18 on the marriage certificate, Aaliyah was only 15 years old at the time, while R. Kelly was 27. However, Aaliyah and her parents had the marriage annulled about six months later.

The pair–who met during the production of Aaliyah‘s debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number–denied they had gotten married until it was uncovered in 2000. Despite this, R. Kelly vehemently denied speculation that he and Aaliyah had a sexual relationship.

However, through one of his lawyers, R. Kelly has finally admitted he and Aaliyah indeed had a sexual relationship in the ’90s. In a statement to The Independent, attorney Thomas Farinella claimed:

“The defence [sic] does concede that Mr. Kelly had underage sexual contact with Jane Doe #1.”

This revelation comes after R. Kelly‘s lawyers fought to dismiss any claims involving Jane Doe #1 due to her “unfortunate passing… on 25 August 2001.” As a result of this information, Jane Doe #1’s identity was pinpointed as Aaliyah, who tragically died in a plane crash when she was 22.

While the lawyer made the statement to the publication and a similar concession in court, he also backtracked the confession.

In court this week, Judge Ann Donnelly asked,

“Are you going to deny that there was sexual contact with Jane Doe 1? They were married.”

Farinella replied,

“No.”

Federal prosecutor Elizabeth Geddes then referenced Aaliyah’s age.

“Are they not going to dispute that at the time Jane Doe 1 was 13 to 15 years old?”

That’s when Farinella appeared to walk back his confession and said,

“We do dispute. We’re not prepared to concede that right now.”

This news comes just days before his federal trial begins. On August 9th, R. Kelly is due in court to face charges of child sexual exploitation, kidnapping, bribery, racketeering, and forced labor. R. Kelly continues to deny the charges levied against him.
