Beyoncé’s Song ‘Be Alive’ From ‘King Richard’ Soundtrack Could Get An Oscar Nomination + Will Smith Expected To Get A Nod
Could Beyoncé and Will Smith be nominated for Oscars at the next Academy Awards?
Yesterday (Thursday, Sept. 2nd), King Richard premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. The biopic follows the story of Venus & Serena Williams‘ father, Richard Williams, and the trailer was released back in July.
At the biopic’s first public screening, viewers also got a chance to hear a new song by Beyoncé. The 39-year-old superstar performed a song for the King Richard biopic, and the track–titled “Be Alive”–reportedly plays at the end of the film. “Be Alive” will be Beyoncé‘s first release since she unveiled Black is King on Disney+ last summer.
Beyoncé‘s song for King Richard makes her eligible for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category at the 2022 Academy Awards. In the past, Beyoncé‘s contribution to 2019’s The Lion King–“Spirit”–was shortlisted for the Best Original Song category at the 2020 Oscars, though it was ultimately not nominated. Resultingly, her musical contribution to King Richard could be Beyoncé‘s first official Oscar nomination.
It’s also worth noting that Beyoncé isn’t the only one speculated to receive an Oscar nomination for King Richard. Will Smith‘s performance as Richard Williams reportedly has viewers believing he’ll be eligible for an Oscar in the Best Actor category.
King Richard will air in theatres and on HBO Max on November 19th.
