Country Singer Morgan Wallen Said He Would Donate $500k To Black-Led Founded Charities After Using N-Word, Money Seems Largely M.I.A.
Did Morgan Wallen make a promise he did not intend to keep?
Country singer, Morgan Wallen, 28, is back in the headlines for seemingly misleading black-lead and founded organizations that he pledged to support.
While appearing on Good Morning America in July after being caught on video saying the N-word, Wallen shared that he saw an increase in music sales following the incident. Due to this, he claimed he would donate money. At the time, he said:
“Before this incident, my album was already doing well. It was already being well-received by critics and by fans. Me and my team noticed that whenever this whole incident happened, that there was a spike in my sales. So we tried to calculate how much it had spiked from this incident. We got to a number somewhere around $500,000, and we decided to donate that money to some organizations, BMAC [Black Music Action Coalition] being the first one.”
But following his interview, critics have questioned how much he donated and to who. In a statement to Rolling Stone, BMAC, the one organization Wallen named while on GMA, said:
“[We’re] disappointed that Morgan has not used his platform to support any anti-racism endeavors.”
Created last year, BMAC was created as
‘an advocacy organization formed to address systemic racism within the music business. Our coalition advocates on behalf of Black artists, songwriters, producers, managers, agents, executives, lawyers, and other passionate industry professionals.’
The group said they did receive money from the singer but also said the $500,000 number
“seems exceptionally misleading.”
Rolling Stone allegedly reached out to 56 other statewide, regional, national Black-led or founded charities and none have reported receiving money from Wallen.
