The forthcoming Whitney Houston biopic has found its Bobby Brown!
Actor Ashton Sanders has landed the role as the “My Prerogative” singer for the upcoming I Wanna Dance With Somebody film.
He has previously starred in award-winning projects like Moonlight and Judas and the Black Messiah and is slated to reprise his role as RZA in the sophomore season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
The news comes as Black Label Media has teamed up with Compelling Pictures and Primary Wave Music to co-finance the movie.
As previously reported, Naomi Ackie will play Whitney Houston.

Pat Houston, the sister-in-law of the late singer and executor of her estate saluted Naomi Ackie’s skills and said last December,
“All Whitney fans have an appetite for perfection when it comes to Whitney and her Legacy. To transform someone into a matchless icon is virtually impossible but with careful consideration Naomi Ackie was selected based on her quality performances and her deep commitment to emerging into the woman that we all loved. We look forward to taking this journey with her.”

Kasi Lemmons, who has led noteworthy films like Eve’s Bayou, Black Nativity, and Harriet, is slated to direct the biopic after Stella Meghie exited due to creative differences. Kasi Lemmons said of directing I Wanna Dance With Somebody,
“Early in my writing career I developed two projects for Whitney, and I had the opportunity to meet her. She was a tremendous, incomparable artist, and her story is as awe-inspiring as it is tragic. I feel privileged to be part of bringing her life story and music to the audience.”
It was announced earlier this month that the film is expected to be released on Dec. 23, 2022.
