Megan Thee Stallion Was Rejected By Major Record Labels When Q-Tip Tried To Get Her Signed

Grammy-award winner Megan Thee Stallion had trouble getting signed to major record labels just years before her rise to fame.

A Tribe Called Quest rapper, Q-Tip said he tried to get Megan Thee Stallion signed to Def Jam and Columbia Records three years ago. During an interview, Q-Tip spoke about how he co-signed Megan Thee Stallion in 2018 after seeing one of her rap videos online. He invited her to New York City to try and get her signed. He said,

“I said ‘I’m signing artists up at Columbia, I want to fly you [Stallion, her mom and her team] all in.”

He went on to say that the record labels didn’t want to sign the rapper at the time because she didn’t have enough social media views. He recalled a conversation with Columbia Records and said,

“The head of the company wasn’t there, Ron Perry, I guess he was detained, but we took the meeting anyway. We sit at the meeting, it’s great. The dude comes back, ‘We saw the views, she’s good, we saw the views and everything, it was whatever. We could just give her like $30,000.’ Just say you don’t wanna f*cking sign her, B. Don’t f*cking embarrass me like that.”

Q-Tip then went to Def Jam and that record label said the same thing.

“I took her to Def Jam, but the same thing happened. I was like ‘I guess the co-sign is not working anymore ya know? And she wound up being Megan Thee Stallion”

He then explained in more detail how record labels have been relying more on data than talent.

“The co-sign is kinda flimsy now ’cause they rely on data which is my point on brining it up. Ron Perry was like, well we looked at her views on YouTube and ya know we just feel like we can only give her this.”
