Model Leomie Anderson Dishes On Redoing Her Own Makeup At Fashion Week Because The Non-Black MUAs Couldn’t Do It Properly: Please Hire More Black Hair & Makeup Artists So We Don’t Have To Go Through This
Leomie Anderson is advocating for Black models with her recent viral video!
Over the weekend, a TikTok made by Leomie Anderson–an English model of Jamaican heritage–was widely irculated through social media. In the short video, Leomie Anderson gives viewers a look into her typical routine when getting ready for a fashion show. Specifically, the 28-year-old model shows how–because she is Black–she constantly has to do her own makeup because the onsite artists don’t know how to do it properly. The video–captioned “And this is why I carry a full makeup kit wherever I go for work“–opens with the on-screen message:
“The reality of being a black model during fashion week.”
The video then shows a non-Black MUA doing her makeup, and the on-screen message reads:
“I asked who could do black makeup. Why do I look like I work in the mines?”
Leomie then sarcastically adds:
“Wow I am clapped.”
The model then continues to record how the on-site hair and makeup artists were unable to successfully prepare her for the fashion show, ultimately leading her to take over:
“The white leader tried to fix the makeup. Good try girl but I felt ugly af. Redid my whole face in 10 minutes. Can’t go out sad.”
At the end of the video, Leomie Anderson writes:
“Yes I ate it up like I always do. But by the time that I walked the runway I wanted to go home. Please hire more black hair and makeup artists so we don’t have to go through this.”

Leomie also spoke on the matter via Twitter. She initially shared the TikTok, adding:
“Being a black model is doing other people’s jobs and not being paid for the extra work looool.”
She also interacted with some Twitter users about the topic, telling one woman:
“If I didn’t have my makeup kit with me, the job wouldn’t have been done! I don’t mind who sees it as long as it makes them rethink the teams they pick when hiring black models, that’s literally the entire point of the video and I’m at a point in my career where I can do that.”
She also responded to another user by doubling down about the fact that, while non-white artists should be trained to do Black people’s makeup, more Black MUAs are still needed:
“It’s still rare to find a non black person who can do our hair and makeup. I still feel anxious sitting in a non black chair because of this and it’s just not nice to feel like you’re playing Russian roulette at work.”
