Jay-Z – Internet Debates If Rapper’s NFL Partnership Has Helped Advance Social & Racial Justice Issues As Planned
Do you think Jay-Z’s partnership with the NFL has made a positive impact on social and racial justice issues?
As previously reported, in 2019 Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, made headlines after he and his entertainment company, Roc Nation, entered into a multi-year partnership with the NFL to enhance the league’s live game experiences and amplify their social justice efforts. Yesterday (Feb. 2) the 52-year-old rapper was at the center of a heated debate as people discussed if his collaboration with the NFL has done any good. The online conversation started when well-known journalist Mike Freeman tweeted,
“I don’t feel like Jay-Z’s relationship with the NFL has produced anything tangible in terms of advancing social and racial justice issues. Which was supposed to be the core of the partnership. Am I wrong?”

Jay-Z soon became a popular topic on Twitter as many weighed and shared their opinions about the tweet.

Freeman’s tweet comes after the former head coach of Miami Dolphins, Brian Flores, 40, filed a lawsuit earlier this week against the NFL, the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, and the Miami Dolphins organizations for racial discrimination. Flores’ suit claims that he was subjected to sham interviews for a head coaching position by both the Broncos and the Giants in order for the teams to appear as if they are following the Rooney Rule.

The Rooney Rule, which was instituted by the NFL in 2003, requires every team to interview at least two external minority candidates for open head coaching positions. In addition to that, Flores is accusing Miami’s team owner, Steven Ross, of attempting to bribe him to throw games by offering $100,000 per loss. The suit adds that when Flores refused Ross then led a campaign to treat him with,
“disdain and held out as someone who was noncompliant and difficult to work with.”
