Kerry Washington Calls Out Her Disney ‘Family’ Amid Controversy Over Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill
Kerry Washington has a history with Disney, having starred in its ABC series Scandal. But she does not agree at all with the company when it comes to its handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Officially called the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, the legislation would limit teachers on what they can talk to students about when it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity. It was passed by the Florida Senate on March 8 and is expected to be signed into law in the coming days by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Some employees of The Walt Disney Company organized a walkout on Tuesday, March 22, over the company’s hesitancy to speak out against the bill. Kerry Washington, 45, wrote on Instagram that she also did not agree and shared her support for those protesting the company.
She wrote:
“For a long time, as an employee of ABC, I have been part of the Disney corporate ‘family.’ It’s a creative and professional community that I am often happy and proud to be a part of. But sometimes family members disagree. This is one of those times.”

She continued:
“I don’t condone the actions or inactions of Disney in this moment. I wholeheartedly support the LGBTQIA+ employees, and stand with them in this walk out today. Please know that you matter. Your rights matter. Your voices matter. I encourage you all to help their voices ring louder today.”
Since the backlash, several Disney companies, including ABC and Disney+, have posted messages online saying they “stand by [their] LGBTQIA+ employees” and “strongly denounce all legislation that infringes on the basic human rights of people in the LGBTQIA+ community.”
