Dwayne Haskins – Wife Of Deceased NFL Player Shares He Was Walking To Find Gas When Struck By Truck On Florida Highway
The wife of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins is sharing more details about his final moments.
As previously reported, Dwayne Haskins was killed on April 9 after being hit by a dump truck while crossing a highway on foot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he had been practicing with his teammates. According to his wife, Kalabrya Haskins, he was attempting to get gas. Kalabrya, who was in Pittsburgh at the time of the incident, had just finished speaking with her husband via telephone before he was killed. In a call to the 911 operator, she said,
“He said he was going to call me back after he finished putting the gas in. I kept calling and kept calling. He wasn’t answering. Eventually, after 10 minutes of calling the phone, eventually it cut off. It’s not working now. I had his location. I just want somebody to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he’s OK and if anything happened to him.”
The operator told Kalabrya there was a report of an accident near where she said her husband got out of his car, but at the time, she couldn’t confirm if he was involved.
It was reported that Haskins was improperly in the roadway and the driver of the dump truck was cleared of having performed any activities that led to the collision, per the final crash report. He was also hit by a second car that attempted to avoid him but struck him on the right side undercarriage.
In her first Instagram post shared since her husband’s death, Kalabrya said,
I want to thank everyone for their continuous outpour of kindness and love for my husband during this extremely difficult time. For those that have asked for clarity, regarding official services, there will be a public celebration of life for my husband, Dwayne Haskins, Jr., where his legacy will be honored with stories told from teammates, coaches, friends, family and loved ones.
Haskins signed as a free agent with the Steelers in 2021 and spent one season with the team. In 2019, he was a first-round draft pick of the Washington Football Team. A former Ohio State standout, Haskins threw 54 touchdowns during his time with the Buckeyes. In a statement released following Haskins’ death, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin remembered Dwayne Haskins as a hard worker and great teammate. He said,
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Dwayne Haskins’ family at this time.
