Janelle Monáe To Star As Iconic Entertainer Josephine Baker In TV Series
Janelle Monae is set to star as iconic entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker in TV series De La Resistance!
The eight-time Grammy nominee and SAG winner will also produce the upcoming project under Wondaland Pictures– the film division of her multimedia company Wondaland. Janelle Monae, 36, has been a long time fan of Josephine Baker, and even modelled her look at this week’s Met Gala (pictured here).
Reportedly, the drama series will focus on Josephine Baker’s role as a spy for the Allies during the French resistance helping defeat the Nazis, and on her experience as one of the world’s most iconic, talented and glamorous entertainers. Baker was an American-born French entertainer and civil rights activist who spent most of her career in Europe. She was the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren Of The Tropics.
In her early career, Josephine Baker was among the most celebrated performers in Paris. Her performances and fashion style became an iconic image and a symbol both of the Jazz Age and Roaring Twenties.
Josephine Baker was highly respected for her contributions to the civil rights movement, often refusing to perform to segregated audiences in the U.S. She was even offered a leadership role in the movement by Coretta Scott King following her husband’s assassination.
Janelle Monae is best known for roles in films like Hidden Figures, Moonlight and Harriet. The singer turned actress has taken hollywood by storm and has quickly set her mark as a well respected actress in the game!
