Black girl magic is in full effect as Karine Jean-Pierre breaks political barriers in Washington!
President Joe Biden announced this past Thursday (May 5th), that political advisor Karine Jean-Pierre would serve as the White House’s next press secretary. Karine Jean-Pierre’s appointment will make her the first Black woman and LGBTQAI+ member to hold the role. The position was previously held by Jen Psaki, who is reportedly leaving the Biden administration for an on-air broadcasting job with MSNBC.

In an honored tweet, the longtime advisor to President Joe Biden thanked him and First Lady Jill Biden for trusting her with the role. Karine additionally expressed gratitude to her “great friend” Jen Psaki, along with the official White House announcement. She wrote:
“Thank you @POTUS and @FLOTUS for this opportunity. It is a true honor. I look forward to serving this Administration and the American people. I have big shoes to fill. @PressSec has been a great friend, mentor and excellent press secretary.”


As press secretary, Karine will be the White House’s top spokesperson. Her responsibilities will include delivering the president’s daily messages and fielding questions from the press. Reportedly, the Haitian born New York native previously held senior communication roles for both the Biden and Obama Administrations. According to Essence, Karine also previously served as Chief Public Affairs Officer for MoveOn.org and an NBC and MSNBC Political Analyst.
The new press secretary shares a daughter with her partner, CNN correspondent Suzanne Malveaux.
