Kendrick Lamar’s ‘We Cry Together’ Faces Biggest Single-Week Drop In Billboard Hot 100 History

Kendrick Lamar is making history, however, it may not be in the way he was hoping!

According to reports, Kendrick Lamar’s single ‘We Cry Together,’ has broken the record for the biggest single-week drop in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. On Tuesday (May 31), Billboard’s Hot 100 chart revealed Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers single “We Cry Together” drastically moved down 81 spots since the previous week—going from No. 16 to No. 97. The song is reportedly expected to be the next track off the album to receive a music video.

‘We Cry Together’–which may be the most jaw-dropping song on the album– depicts a realistic recreation of an argument in an abusive relationship that finds Kendrick Lamar and actress Taylour Paige saying horrible and explicit things to each other, with her delivering an entire verse while hysterically crying, and apparently culminates with the two of them having sex.

The album’s first two singles, “N95” and “Silent Hill,” have also seen steep declines on the chart, going from No. 3 to No. 17 and No. 7 to No. 49. This week, Kendrick’s single “N95” took another drop and is No.39 on the Billboard chart while “Silent Hill” dropped even lower and is now No. 51 on the chart.

‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ also underperformed compared to its predecessor, Damn. According to reports, Damn reportedly moved 603,000 units in its first week, compared to the latest album’s first-week output of only 295,000 units.

Despite underwhelming sales numbers, Kendrick Lamar’s latest album is getting rave reviews from most major publications and his loyal fan base. However, there has also been some backlash for Kendrick Lamar’s decision to feature  Kodak Black on multiple tracks amid the sexual assault allegations against him.

Prior to Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, Tekashi 6ix9ine set the record for biggest second-week drop from No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after his single “Trollz” featuring Nicki Minaj fell from the top spot to No. 34 in a week on the chart back in 2020. That unwanted record was then broken in 2021 by Taylor Swift’s single “Willow,” which dropped from No. 1 to No. 38.
