Memphis Shooter Ezekiel Kelly In Police Custody After Streaming Killing Rampage On Facebook Live, Aunt Says “There’s Something Going On With Him Mentally”
Four people are dead and three people are left injured after a gruesome shooting spree took place in Memphis, Tennessee this week.
According to officials, shortly after midnight on Wednesday, September 7, nineteen-year-old Ezekiel Kelly embarked on a citywide gun rampage that pursued until the late evening.
Close to 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Memphis police received reports of a male homicide that had just been committed in the 3100 block of Lyndale Avenue. Later that evening, around 4:30 p.m., another man was found in his vehicle (with a number of fatal, firearm wounds) in the 900 block of South Parkway East. A female victim near Norris Road and I-20 was also taken to the hospital for a non-critical shot to the leg.
Ezekiel Kelly took to Facebook Live to stream one of his horrific shootings. In the clip, he’s seen entering an AutoZone location and immediately firing off inside of the store.

From there, Ezekiel Kelly’s crimes continued throughout the town, hitting the area of Poplar Avenue, North Evergreen, and West Raines Road, where more casualties were discovered.
Following an unharmed carjacking at the Southaven, Mississippi state line, law enforcement commenced a high-speed chase in search of the recently-identified suspect’s whereabouts and ordered citizens of Memphis to take mandatory shelter.

At 8:58 p.m., Kelly was finally taken into custody.
During a news conference on Thursday morning, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland spoke out about the traumatic occurrence. He expressed,
“I am angry for [the victims’ families], and I’m angry for our citizens who had to shelter in place for their own safety until this suspect was caught. This is no way for us to live, and it is not acceptable. The people of our city were confronted with the type of violence no one should have to face.”
Although the first to make national headlines, Ezekiel Kelly already had a troublesome legal history. In April of 2021, he pled guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault after being slapped with criminal attempted first degree murder. His original sentencing was three years, but he only served eleven months before coming home this past March.
In an exclusive interview about the current first-degree murder charges that Kelly is up against, his aunt allegedly said that the teen’s behavior is “not him” and indicated that he was under emotional distress.
“I’m shocked just like everybody else. The only person who knows what’s going on with Ezekiel is Ezekiel. He’s got a lot of stuff going on, a lot of deaths around him. He wasn’t just going around doing something as a joke. There’s something going on with him mentally; he needs help.”
She added:
“That’s not him. It’s hard to survive [in Memphis], especially when you don’t know who your daddy is, and you’re dealing with these deaths. I’m his aunt. I hate that people lost their lives. I sympathize and empathize, but I haven’t heard anything from him.”
Our deepest prayers and condolences go out to those who lost loved ones in this terrifying tragedy.
