At the beginning of the 2022-2023 soccer season, Barcelona signed an agreement with Spotify, with the streaming platform now featuring on both the men’s and women’s team strips and training kits. Since both organizations signed the deal, the Camp Nou Stadium became the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium.
As part of their collaboration, Barcelona agreed to ‘celebrate artists from across the world on Spotify’s space on their iconic Blaugrana jersey.
Some may question what made Drake bet on Barcelona. Drake’s record label and brand OVO was featured on Barcelona’s jersey in honor of the “God’s Plan” rapper hitting 50 billion streams on Spotify. He even took to Instagram to share his excitement.
In a photo revealing the jersey, Drake captioned the post,
“To celebrate being the first artist with 50 billion streams on @spotify@FCBarcelona will wear the OVO owl at El Clasico on Sunday this doesn’t feel real but it is”
FC Barcelona had this to say about their new partnership with Spotify and their appreciation for Drake’s support.
“One of the key axes in the alliance between FC Barcelona and Spotify is to unite soccer and music to connect with new audiences around the world. To bring together these two fields that share their ability to unite people and arouse the emotions of fans, the first men’s soccer team will take the field in Sunday’s Clásico with a shirt that, for the first time, will not display the logo of its main partner on the front.”
Barcelona added,
“But the emblem of an internationally renowned artist: the singer and songwriter Drake, winner of 4 Grammy awards and the first to reach 50 billion plays on Spotify.”
In recent years, a running joke has formed on social media suggesting the rapper is a bad luck charm for sporting teams, with players often falling to defeat after meeting and taking a picture with Drake. From the looks of it, there was a lot of bad luck that took place on Sunday.
With the rapper’s net worth being roughly $260 million, it looks like he won’t be hurting too much from the $800K (£500,000) loss!
