Gladys Knight Awarded w/ Kennedy Center Honors From President Joe Biden
The stars were out in Washington, D.C. Sunday (Dec. 4) night for the 45th annual Kennedy Center Honors.
Seven-time Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight, 78, received the Kennedy Center Honors for her contribution to the arts. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and their spouses attended, as did members of the president’s Cabinet and Congress.
On the red carpet, actor George Clooney — a big Gladys Knight fan — recalled a moment from the dinner where the honorees received their medallions.
“Gladys got up and sang and, you know, just a cappella started to sing…The only thing that was terrible was that I had to follow. So there’s 300 people in the room going, this is transcendent — and I’m like ‘God, this is horrible! I have follow Gladys Knight!”

Other honorees included Amy Grant, George Clooney, Tania León and U2. They all lined up for photos and took in the applause as Joe Biden sang their praises. At one point, he even singled out Gladys Knight specifically and made a joke about a classic song of hers. Biden called all the honorees “truly exceptional” during the reception noting George Clooney’s exceptional movie roles over the years, as well as his philanthropy.
