Shannon Sharpe Blasts Co-Host Skip Bayless For Controversial Tweet Questioning NFL’s Decision To Suspend Buffalo Bills Game After Damar Hamlin Suffered Cardiac Arrest On Field

It looks like things got pretty intense during Wednesday’s (Jan. 4) episode of “Undisputed.”

Shannon Sharpe, who returned after missing Tuesday’s episode of “Undisputed,” seemingly confronted his co-host Skip Bayless over his controversial tweet about Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest while on the field during “Monday Night Football.”

On Monday (Jan. 2), Damar Hamlin underwent cardiac arrest amid a game — that was ultimately suspended — against the Cincinnati Bengals. Reportedly, paramedics were able to restore his heartbeat while on the field, and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further treatment. He remains in critical condition.

Damar Hamlin

Following Damar Hamlin’s health crisis, sports commentator Skip Bayless took to Twitter to share some of his thoughts. However, fellow users weren’t happy about his insensitive tweet about the NFL star’s tragic event, as his concern seemed to have shifted toward the halting of the game instead of Hamlin’s health.

He wrote,

“No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game – but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome … which suddenly seems so irrelevant.”

Bayless ultimately received major backlash and quickly issued an apology.

“Nothing is more important than that young man’s health. That was the point of my last tweet. I’m sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to.”

In his opening monologue on Wednesday (Jan.4), Shannon Sharpe began by addressing Damar Hamlin’s health crisis, and how witnessing the incident affected him. He said,

“There has been a lot of speculation of why I wasn’t on-air yesterday, and I won’t get into speculation or conjecture and innuendo, but I will say this: in watching that game on Monday night, what happened to Damar Hamlin struck me a little different…As a brotherhood in the NFL when injuries happen, and we know injures are a part of the game…but I’ve never seen anybody have to be revived and fight for their life on the field.”

Shannon then addressed Skip’s tweet and said,

“Skip tweeted something and although I disagree with the tweet, and hopefully Skip will take it down…”

However, before Shannon could finish his statement, Skip Bayless interrupted and said,

“Timeout, I’m not going to take it down. I stand by what I tweeted.”

Shannon Sharpe then became frustrated and said,

“I cannot even get through a monologue without you interrupting me… I didn’t want yesterday to get into a situation where Damar Hamlin was the issue. We should’ve been talking about him and not getting into your tweet. That was what I wasn’t going to do, but you can’t even let me finish my open monologue.”

Bayless then said,

“I was under the impression you weren’t going to bring this up because no one had a problem with that tweet.”

Sharpe hit back, saying,

“Clearly the bosses wanted you to offer explanation.”

After the two men seemingly couldn’t come to an understanding, Shannon cut his opening statements short and moved on with the show, noting the focus should have always been on Damar Hamlin and not the postponed game.
