Selena Quintanilla — Father of Late Music Icon Takes Legal Action Against Cruise Line For Using Daughter’s Name & Likeness For Tribute Voyage
The father of late music icon Selena Quintanilla is not here for a cruise line using his daughter’s name and legacy to promote a tribute voyage.
Abraham Quintanilla Jr. is suing Catalina Classic Cruises over the company’s Cumbia Cruise L.A. excursions, which he said has been referred to this year as a “Tributo to Selena.” He noted that the company is a serial offender and the name of last year’s trip was “Cumbia Cruise Homenaje a Selena y La Sonor Dinamita por Maritza y Su Sonora.”

The evening boat ride reportedly plays music while transporting guests around Long Beach Bay, equipped with two dance floors, food, and a few stocked bars.
According to Abraham Quintanilla Jr., using Selena Quintanilla‘s name on the trip has greatly confused the public and even led some to believe that her estate allowed the use, which is just untrue.
The frustrated father said that he still has authority over his daughter’s trademarks, name, voice, signature, and likeness in relation to merchandise and advertisements, among other things — and the company never obtained consent to use them. Therefore, they had no right to depart on a voyage in honor of his daughter and her memory.

Quintanilla is now trying to stop the company from using his daughter’s name and trademarks, and he also wants them to pay back any money they gained from the tribute cruises while doing so.
