EXCLUSIVE: Mariah Carey & Lee Daniels Have Started Casting For Her TV Biopic & Are Searching For The Perfect Actress To Portray The Singer
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports that R&B songstress Mariah Carey and famed director Lee Daniels have allegedly started looking for the actress who will star in the singer’s coming TV biopic.
As we covered back in 2020, Mariah Carey, 52, publicly shared her interest in directing a film based on her memoir released that year titled “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” After conversations around the idea kicked off, however, award-winning film director Lee Daniels – who worked with the singer on his critically acclaimed 2009 movie “Precious” – was tapped to produce a TV adaptation of the book.
Now, theJasmineBrand exclusively reports, that casting for the project is allegedly in the works. During a previous interview, the “Touch My Body” singer stated that because she owns the masters to all of her music, she isn’t worried too much about searching for the best singer. Instead, Carey shared she’s focused on someone who is gifted theatrically and can really bring her essence to the role. She reportedly stated:
“I don’t think it’s about ‘cast the girl who sings the Mariah Carey style,’ whatever that is. It’s about casting a great actress with a somewhat similar look and just making sure the acting is there.”
Adding:
“Because we have the music—they can sing along to it.”
Daniels also previously spoke about the project. Explaining why he believed a visual version of the memoir should be a limited series instead of a film. He said:
“I think it’s bigger than a film…I think that if there’s so much to her thing, I think it’s an epic limited series. I think that, I think it’s as big as Aretha’s story.”
Adding about Carey, a 5-time Grammy Award winner, he continued:
“I think that she’s so misunderstood … I didn’t know really how her mind ticked until I read that d**n book and realized that she is what defines a diva, what really defines a diva. And it’s a complicated life that she’s had. And every song that she’s had was written from a traumatic or a powerful experience. And she doesn’t get credit for that either. So I’m excited about exploring that story. We just got to find somebody that’s going to be right to play her, which is going to be impossible, but you know, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
The memoir covers Carey’s childhood growing up as a biracial youth in Long Island New York within a “dysfunctional” family. The book garnered critical acclaim and became a best-seller after its first week on the shelves. At this time there has been no further information released about the TV project and it is unclear when we can expect the series to be released.
We will continue to update as more information is made public.
