Method Man, real name Clifford Smith, Jr., 53, was reflecting on his past life as a bachelor during a recent interview when the topic of his marriage was brought up. Acknowledging the role that keeping his relationship with Tamika Smith out of the public has played, he stated:

“I’ve been married to the same woman for 30 years, and the fact that my wife and I stay out of the public eye is a blessing in itself.”

Prior to celebrating his marriage, Method Man recalled the moment he realized that going out and partying no longer suited him. He stated:

“I think there was some afterparty [a long time ago] in California, and I was having a bad day that day, but we all went out anyway…And the party was lit, it was a nice party, but I never felt so alone in my life.”

He continued:

“And the fact that I felt conscious of being alone in a crowded room…then I felt uncomfortable…I wasn’t into it at all, and it was like, none of this is for me anymore.”

While it’s unclear when the transformative moment happened in regards to his relationship with Tamika Smith, it’s reported that he and his wife first sparked a relationship in the 90s while Smith worked as the musician’s personal assistant. In 2001 the couple tied the knot, and have since welcomed three children together; son Shakuan and girl-boy twins Cheyenne and Raekwon.

Method Man also addressed keeping his home life at home during his performance at the Essence Fest this year, stating:

“Just know me and my wife are good…As far as my family goes, I keep it out of the media. We’re happier that way, plus [my wife] prefers it that way. But just know we’re happy, period. That’s it.”
