Janelle Monáe Deletes Michael Jackson Balcony Parody After Receiving Backlash

Janelle Monáe is facing criticism for her recently deleted parody of the infamous Michael Jackson balcony moment.

Janelle Monáe (The Jennifer Hudson Show)

The 38-year-old singer recently deleted a post from her Instagram where she parodied the iconic pop culture moment when music legend Michael Jackson dangled his child off a hotel balcony during a stay in Berlin.

In the video, Janelle Monáe walks towards the balcony wearing a black wig and red shirt. She holds her cyberpup in her arms, covering its head with a blanket.

She then briefly holds the pup over the balcony edge before pulling it back. Near the end, Janelle Monáe waves at “fans,” then covers her face with a curtain and tosses a towel into the crowd.

While many found the clip hilarious, some Michael Jackson fans did not find the parody amusing at all.

One X user commented,

“The fact that @JanelleMonae is so classless now and attacking @JanetJackson brother Michael Jackson who has been dead over 15 years is pathetic and sad. Janelle I hope you never have to face his sister now because what you did was sick and evil and you know it!”

Another X user wrote,

“She badly needed that much attention. She couldn’t take the backlash and deleted it. I thought she was a singer, not a clown.”

As noted above, Janelle’s clip was inspired by the November 19, 2002 incident when Michael Jackson made headlines by holding his nine-month-old son, PrinceBlanket” Michael Jackson, over a fifth-floor balcony in Berlin, showcasing him to a crowd of over 200 people outside his hotel.

At the time, Blanket’s existence had only been revealed to the world in August of that year, and there was mystery surrounding the identity of Blanket’s mother and whether Michael Jackson had adopted him.
