Tuskegee University Closes Campus To The Public Following Deadly Homecoming Shootout
The president of Tuskegee University, Mark Brown, announced Monday, November 11th, that the school will end their open campus policy effective immediately following a deadly mass shooting over the weekend.
According to Brown, an unsanctioned event was held on the Alabama campus on Sunday, November 10th in honor of the university’s 100th homecoming.
Around 11:30 pm, the event was interrupted by a round of gunfire in a parking lot, claiming the life of 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson and injuring at least 16 others. Reports note that Johnson was not enrolled at the school, though several other victims were students.

Brown stated that moving forward, no outsiders will be allowed on the campus without prior authorization, adding that necessary IDs must be worn at all times.
According to ABC News, police have detained one person in connection to the shooting, 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick of Montgomery, Alabama, who authorities say they apprehended while he attempted to flee the scene with a firearm.
At this time, however, investigators have not confirmed whether or not Myrick was an actual triggerman. They believe multiple people were involved in the incident.
