The Alabama A&M University community is mourning the loss of redshirt freshman football player Medrick Burnett Jr., who passed away on Tuesday (Nov. 26) weeks after suffering a serious in-game head injury.
The unfortunate incident occurred back in October during the A&M and Alabama State rivalry game. While on the field, Burnett Jr. collided with an opposing player and reportedly had to be taken away on a stretcher. Amid his hospital stay his sister launched a GoFundMe on his behalf and shared he had several brain bleeds and swelling.
Unfortunately, the 20-year-old succumbed to his injuries and, in a statement shared today (Nov. 27), Alabama A&M athletic director Dr. Paul A. Bryant announced he passed.
“Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal.”
