Wildfires Threaten L.A. Hills As Powerful Windstorm Intensifies Fire Risk
Firefighters raced to contain a fast-moving wildfire in Los Angeles hills, threatening celebrity homes as a powerful Santa Ana windstorm battered Southern California on Tuesday. Gusts up to 100 mph toppled trees, created dangerous surf, and fueled flames, forcing evacuations in Pacific Palisades, where over 200 acres of dry brush burned.
Actors James Woods and Steve Guttenberg shared scenes of chaos, with Guttenberg urging evacuees to leave car keys behind to clear paths for firetrucks. Nearby, Venice Beach residents saw flames from six miles away, while three local schools relocated students.
Utilities considered cutting power to half a million customers to prevent further fires, as forecasters warned of “atmospheric blow-dryer” conditions persisting for days. Southern California, in a prolonged drought, faces elevated fire risk due to dry vegetation following last season’s heavy rains.
