Wendy Williams’ Guardianship Battle Inspires NY Senator’s Push For Family Visitation Rights Law

Wendy Williams’ Guardianship Battle Inspires NY Senator’s Push For Family Visitation Rights Law
Wendy Williams’ ongoing guardianship battle has caught the attention of New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo, who is taking action to help families in similar situations.
Following a series of interviews Wendy conducted last week, in which she described her conservatorship as feeling “like she’s in prison,” Palumbo announced he is reintroducing a guardianship bill called Karilyn’s Law.
Palumbo initially introduced the bill in 2022 but didn’t have enough support to get it passed. He says the law’s goal is to give families a clear legal path to visit loved ones under guardianship, which he argues is missing in the current system.

Under the law, families would file a motion to request visitation, and guardians would have 10 days to present evidence if they believe the visitor is acting inappropriately. If no misconduct is proven, visitation will be granted.
The senator, who has followed Wendy’s case closely, calls it “tragic” that she has reportedly been confined and separated from her family. He emphasized that, despite her reported health challenges, Wendy should still have the comfort of being with her loved ones.

With the increased attention surrounding Wendy’s case, Palumbo says he is hopeful that Karilyn’s Law will bring about change. He also says that since introducing the bill, his office has been flooded with messages from citizens concerned about guardianship laws.
