Roc Nation CEO Says Lil Wayne Was Considered For New Orleans Super Bowl Halftime Show + Explains Why Kendrick Lamar Was The Best Choice
Desiree Perez, CEO of Roc Nation, recently confirmed that Lil Wayne was considered to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in his hometown next month, and also explained why he ultimately lost the gig to Kendrick Lamar.
In an interview with The New Orleans Advocate, she stated:
“I didn’t choose the artist, but I do believe there was definitely consideration for Lil Wayne.”
Perez added that when it came time for the final selection, the organization ultimately decided,
“Kendrick is the right person for the show at this moment.”

As you may recall, Kendrick’s announcement as the headliner back in September sparked widespread discussion. While supporters agreed he was the perfect choice—fresh off his triumphant rap battle with Drake and his No. 1 summer hit “Not Like Us”—others, including Wayne himself, felt this should have been Wayne’s moment to take the coveted stage.
Perez also responded to Wayne’s comments about feeling snubbed. The rapper previously shared that he deeply wanted to headline the show so his mother could see him perform on such a massive stage in their hometown. Reacting to this, Perez said:
“Aww. I actually didn’t know he had said that. We love that everybody wants to be on the stage—that we’ve completely changed the conversation to fighting for it versus boycotting. We’ve come a long way.”

Explaining the final decision to go with Kendrick, she added:
“New Orleans is so rich in culture… We have to take into consideration that whoever performs can speak to music culture, regardless of age. It has to nod to real music, regardless of the genre. And Kendrick does that. Kendrick’s richness and culture are truly a nod to New Orleans.”
