YNW Melly Could Be Released Soon Ahead Of Double-Murder Retrial
Rapper YNW Melly will soon learn if he’ll be released after spending the past six years in custody while standing trial in his high-profile double murder case.
The rapper, real name Jamell Maurice Demons, appeared in a Florida courtroom on May 6 for a pre-trial hearing where his attorneys argued for his release on bond. Melly’s legal team stated that, given the lengthy time he’s already served and the fact that his first trial ended in a hung jury, he should be allowed to await his next trial under house arrest.
They assured the court that his label, 300 Entertainment, is prepared to cover the bond. Additionally, if released, Melly would wear an ankle monitor and hire 24/7 security.

The hearing stems from a lawsuit Melly filed in November against the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, alleging he was unlawfully detained following the mistrial. A judge then ordered the sheriff’s office to justify why Melly shouldn’t be released, prompting this week’s proceedings.
However, prosecutors remain opposed to any bond, citing the gravity of the charges and noting additional allegations of witness tampering during his time in custody. Melly is accused of the 2018 m*rders of his close friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams.
His retrial is scheduled for September 10, 2025. A ruling on his potential bond release is expected in the coming days.
