Judge Allows Drake To Subpoena Key Witness In UMG Case Over Alleged Bot Promotion & Defamation
Drake scored a legal win in his fight against Universal Music Group as a Manhattan judge approved an alternative way to serve a subpoena on a key witness.
Judge Jeannette A. Vargas granted the motion to serve Kojo Menne Asamoah by mail and email after Drake’s team made eleven attempts to locate him in person. Court filings noted, “Despite several days of surveillance, the investigative firm was unable to personally identify Mr. Asamoah.”

So why does Drake want Mr. Asamoah subpoenaed? The rapper believes he has knowledge of UMG’s alleged efforts to manipulate streaming numbers for Kendrick Lamar’s diss record Not Like Us.
The court wrote, “Plaintiff alleges that Mr. Asamoah possesses knowledge relating to UMG’s use of covert tactics to promote the Defamatory Material,” including “payments and/or financial incentives from UMG to third parties involved in online botting.”
The broader lawsuit accuses Universal Music Group of defamation and deceptive business practices.
Thoughts on the latest in Drake’s ongoing lawsuit?
