Five-Time NBA All-Star John Wall Announces Retirement After 11 Seasons: ‘Retired But Never Done’
John Wall is officially stepping away from professional basketball after an impactful 11-season NBA career.
The celebrated point guard, best known for his time with the Washington Wizards, and most recently the Rockets and Clippers, announced his retirement in a video shared today (August 19), saying:
“Every jersey I wore meant more than wins and stats… It was about representing something bigger. And it’s something I couldn’t do without you.”
Expressing gratitude to his support system, including teammates, coaches, trainers, fans, and especially his mother, Wall added:
“Thank you for all your sacrifices… I hope I made you proud.”

Over his career, Wall, 34, earned five All-Star nominations, was selected for the All-NBA Third Team in 2017, and made the All-Defensive Second Team in 2015. He averaged 18.7 points, 8.9 assists, and 4.2 rebounds across 647 regular-season games, cementing his legacy as one of the Wizards’ most dynamic playmakers.
Injuries, most notably a torn Achilles in 2019, gradually derailed what began as a remarkably promising career, limiting his later seasons with Houston and Los Angeles. But his legacy extends far beyond stats and awards. His humble, heartfelt farewell shows just how deeply he connected with fans, teammates, and the sport itself. In his final words on his retirement, he shared:
“Today, I’m stepping off the court, but not away from the game… Retired, but never done. I’m doing it the Wall Way.”
