Judge Frank Caprio, the longtime municipal judge from Providence, Rhode Island, who became a viral sensation for his compassionate courtroom decisions, has passed away at age 88.
His d*ath was announced Wednesday via his official Instagram page, which stated he d*ed following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” the post read. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
Caprio rose to national prominence through clips from his courtroom series, “Caught in Providence,” which aired from 2018 to 2020 and earned multiple Daytime Emmy nominations. Known for his empathetic rulings, often dismissing fines for those experiencing hardship, Caprio became a symbol of humanity within the judicial system.
Just one day before his death was announced, a video of Caprio smiling and asking for prayers appeared on social media. The timing of the recording remains unclear.
Caprio began his judicial career in 1985 and retired in 2023. He was known for blending justice with grace, a quality that made his courtroom moments widely shared online and deeply appreciated by viewers.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
