“Girlfriends” Creator Mara Brock Akil Says The Cast Is Ready To Return, But She Still Needs $50 Million To Make It Happen: ‘We All Want The Right Value’
“Girlfriends” creator Mara Brock Akil is still standing on the $50 million figure she previously shared in 2025, and she is putting it back into the conversation in hopes of finally making the long-awaited movie happen.
During a recent appearance on the @questioneverything.podcast podcast, Akil said she already knows what she wants the film to be and has a story ready for Joan, Toni, Maya, and Lynn. The catch is that she believes the project needs a $50 million budget to be done properly.
“I need the money that I need and if it’s not going to be there, I can’t keep knocking on every door,” Akil said. “I have to sort of move on. But when that money comes, or a new idea comes for a lesser amount, if I can’t do it right, why am I doing it?”
Akil made a similar ask during a 2025 appearance on “Sherri,” where she joked to Sherri Shepherd, “Do you know anybody who has $50 million?”
She also addressed the “Sex and the City” comparisons, saying, “Honey, we were fly on ‘Girlfriends’ too.”
The full original cast is reportedly open to returning. “They want to come back. They’re open to it. But we all want the right value,” Akil said.
For now, she is trusting the timing.
“I really believe in God’s timing,” she added. “I can just make new things from the woman that brought you ‘Girlfriends.’”
Are you ready for “Girlfriends” to return?
