Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer Cassandra Wilson Has Passed Away At 70

The jazz world is mourning the loss of one of its most distinctive voices following the passing of Grammy-winning singer Cassandra Wilson at age 70.

Wilson transitioned Wednesday, September 2, at her home, according to jazz station WBGO. Her longtime manager Robert Torre confirmed the news, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cassandra Wilson, the Grammy Award-winning and legendary jazz artist. Cassandra Wilson transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager.”

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Wilson began playing piano at age 6 before launching her singing career in the 1970s. She later moved to New York City and became a founding member of the M-Base Collective.

Wilson signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and earned Grammys for “New Moon Daughter” and “Loverly.” Her final album, “Coming Forth by Day,” arrived in 2015 as a tribute to Billie Holiday.
