Martha Stewart Blames ‘Today’ Host Craig Melvin For Controversial Homeless Halloween Costume

Martha Stewart is offering a new explanation for her controversial Halloween costume, revealing that an unexpected wardrobe mishap involving Today show host Craig Melvin led to her decision to dress as a homeless person.

During an appearance at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando on November 3, the 85-year-old lifestyle mogul explained that Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate on her clothing during an October 30 cooking segment.

Melvin was dressed as Snoop Dogg for the show’s Halloween celebration.

“He spilled chocolate all over my sweater, which I was going to wear on Halloween night,” Stewart recalled.

With little time to prepare for a Halloween party, Stewart said she improvised.

“So the easiest costume was to get dressed up as bum,” she explained.

Stewart said she then looked at herself and decided to add a sign to complete the costume.

“I looked at myself. I said, ‘You really look hungry and homeless.’ So I wrote a sign that said ‘I’m hungry,’ and boy, did that go off.”

The costume, which featured distressed clothing and a sign asking for food, sparked widespread criticism from people who accused Stewart of mocking homelessness.

Following the backlash, Stewart deleted the photo and initially defended her intentions, saying she wanted to raise awareness about homelessness.

She later issued a stronger apology.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” Stewart wrote.

She acknowledged that her costume was insensitive and apologized for her actions.

Her latest explanation has drawn attention because her initial statements focused on raising awareness rather than the last-minute wardrobe mishap.

Melvin has not been accused of participating in the decision to create the costume.
