Betty Shabazz’s Daughter Not Impressed With ‘Betty and Coretta’ Movie + Image Awards Draws Impressive Numbers
While many of us were excited to watch the highly anticipated Lifetime movie, ‘Betty & Corretta‘, some of us would be surprised to know that the daughter of Malcolm X, Ilyasah Shabazz, is none to pleased with how her mother Betty Shabazz, was portrayed.
As a backstory, the film is about the friendship between two the women as they struggle to raise their children in the wake of the assassinations of their husbands. Mary J. Blige portrays Malcolm X’s wife Betty Shabazz and Oscar nominated actress Angela Bassett portrays Coretta Scott King. So what’s the issue? The Washington Post reports Ilyasah Shabazz stated,
My mother was not a weak, timid, insecure woman as portrayed. She was regal, compassionate, strong, loving, beautiful, resilient and well-educated. If only Lifetime had consulted us, the sisters, maybe this would be more than fiction. I am not pointing my finger solely at them, but it must be our responsibility to ensure history is properly documented.
Ouch! And in more pleasant news…
As we always say, numbers don’t lie…which is great news for the NAACP Image Awards. The 44th Annual awards ceremony had the biggest audience in four years. Reportedly, 3.0 million viewers tuned in to watch winners like Kerry Washington, Denzel Washington and LL Cool J win big. Congrats to them!
