Lil Mama Gets Emotional, Calls Nicki Minaj Swag Jacker + Explains Hopping on Stage
As a guest on “The Breakfast Club,” Lil Mama had a lot to say about Nicki Minaj , her uninvited appearance with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys at the VMA’s and her own music career.
Apparently it wasn’t a silly mistake when Lil Mama claimed that Nicki Minaj stole her style. She was actually serious about that… On Wednesday (July 20th) the ex-rapper and “America’s Best Dance Crew” judge continued to voice her opinion. She was a guest on Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” radio show where hosts DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God asked her a series of pointed questions about her latest moves and also threw in a few harsh jokes at her about her looks. (Charlamagne kept telling her she has an old, manly, ugly face. Ouch!)
When asked if she really thought Nicki Minaj stole her style she said ….
“The last time we’ve seen any female MCs before Nicki, there was me… It’s just a lot of controversy around being a female in hip-hop. I think our community really focuses on celebrating one female MC at a time, and I think that’s where it comes in, the controversy, who stole what style. At the end of the day, I’m talented and there’s only one Lil Mama.” (At the 1:30 mark)
When asked why she had the audacity to jump on stage, uninvited, at the VMA’s in 2009 while Alicia Keys and Jay-Z performed “Empire State of Mind” she explained….
“I’ve always been a part of Hip-Hop. In my day, in my era you could go on stage. You would see that energy and it would be received. So maybe my love was misconcepted. But I had a good time!”
(At the 5:30 mark) (No, misconcepted is not an actual word, by the way.)
At one point, she breaks down into tears when talking about her mother who died from cancer while she was creating her first album.
“That was a struggle. But my music will speak for itself. My actions will speak for itself. My mother will be proud. My father will be proud at the end of the day. And nobody can stop me.” (At the 19:10 mark)
She goes at Nicki Minaj and the “doll” image and also goes in on radio stations in general at the 20:25 mark.
“If ya’ll are not supporting the young people that are coming out of this community, nobody else will. They follow radio, they listen to whatever ya’ll play so when ya’ll young kids grow up to be hoes and drug dealers that’s your fault. I’m going to be me regardless, I’m not changing who I am. I don’t look at TV and listen to radio and say ‘I’m gonna be a hoe now’ or ‘I’m gonna talk like this’ or ‘I’m gonna get a tattoo that says I’m a doll, I’m gonna get a chain that says I’m a doll.’ I’m Little Mama, till the day I die.”
When DJ Envy said that was a stab at Nicki, Lil Mama confirmed by replying, “Gun Shot.”
Little Mama has her fair share of wacky opinions but I think she made a few valid points in this discussion. You can watch the entire video – jokes, tears, and all – below.
