Numbers Don’t Lie :: ‘Watch the Throne’ Breaks iTunes Record

It comes as no surprise, but today it’s been confirmed that Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Watch the Throne” (WTT) album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. According to Nielsen SoundScan, they sold 436,000 copies, which just happens to be the second-largest sales week of the year for an album, although Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” beat them out.

And apparently, I’m the only person on the planet that doesn’t cop albums from iTunes, because everybody and their mamma purchased WTT online.

In addition to doing well on the Billboard, WTT also broke the iTunes record for first week sales with 290,000 downloads. Coldplay previously held this title with their 2008 LP, Viva La Vida. Dope. Via Billboard
[SIDE-BAR: A dear friend of mine, who happens to be a nerd, had a few thoughts that I thought that I’d share: 1. Adele is TWO times platinum. How come no one is talking about the difference in album sales between Lady Gaga and Adele? 2. Beyonce has a huge fan base…is it highly unlikely that she will go platinum w/ “4”? 3. Hip-hop sales decrease in the second week (generally). With this in mind, will folk continue to cop WTT in the 2nd week??? Enough to go platinum?]
