Keri Hilson, Estelle, Mashonda & Others Attend WEEN

Last week, the 3rd annual Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN) Awards were held at the Samsung Experience Theater in New York.

Co-founded by Valeisha Butterfield-Jones, WEENÂ is a coalition of women and men of all ages and races committed to supporting, promoting and defending the balanced, positive portrayal of women in entertainment and society.

This year, the award ceremony honored singers Estelle, Keri Hilson, philanthropist Tracy Wilson Mourning, radio personality Egypt Sherrod, Billboard magazine editor-in-chief Danyel Smith and director of communications at Moet Hennessy, Jennifer Yu. In an interview with Essence, Keri Hilson expressed her gratitude saying,
“My spirit is lifted, really. I’m humbled. We’ve definitely come so far. I realize how many liberties we’ve expressed, and how many liberties we’ve taken, and made that our own. We’re allowed to be Avante Garde, we’re allowed to have a powerful voice, and not have to apologize for it.”
Singer Estelle also shared,
“I love what they stand for, I love what they’re doing. It gives me an extra boost to keep me doing what I’m doing. This is something special to me because it’s about women supporting women, so this is an amazing moment. It’s great that they’re doing this.”
