Miguel Calls Grammy Exclusion A Travesty, Says Jill Scott Shoulda Been Included
After the recent announcement of the Grammy Award nominations, Miguel took to twitter to announce how disappointed he was that he was not nominated. Now, in an interview, he speaks out about how he felt about the Grammy nominations, as well as his Soul Train Award and where the inspiration for his music comes from. Peep some quotes.
On His Soul Train Award for Best New Artist:
“A huge honor. It was really cool, actually; the first accolade I’ve relieved as an artist. I was overwhelmed at the moment. But it was a great feeling.”
On Not Being Nominated for a Grammy:
“We’re all human. It’s like when you work really hard to get a good grade in a class, and you’ve put all your heart and your work and your concentration into something. I’m human just like the next person, so I have my feelings. I feel like, as a human being, I have the right to say what I feel. I understand that people may disagree, but if you don’t agree with me that’s fine. What’s more important is that there were other incredibly talented artists, and other artists who have been putting their heart and soul into it that deserve it more than I did, including Jill Scott, who’s a friend of mine. She should have definitely been nominated. There were so many discrepancies, I feel like. I know there’s new rules, and things have changed on the Grammy board, but it really was a travesty to see artists who I feel deserved it more than I did not be recognized in this way. But it’s alright, I’ll just keep working hard.”
On Why His Music is so Personable:
“The reason why music is the universal language is because despite language you can feel emotion. I think that’s what makes music relatable, is the emotion that it’s rooted in. So I draw from personal experiences because in my own vulnerability, I find the most relatability. And I think that’s what we’re all searching for, is some kind of understanding.”
On His Sophomore Album:
“There’s a sign that I have in my head. And I have an incredibly talented group of musicians who I trust, and who trust me, and who are open to finding it and fine-tuning it. I’m excited to bring them together and create this sound that I’ve been having in my head, and delivering it to my fans. Pushing the boundaries, at the end of the day, is our responsibility as artists to introduce, not only our fan base, but anyone who’s open minded, to things that they may not introduce themselves to. I think that’s the driving force behind what I do, is that there’s always some way, shape, or form where we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s expected.”
