Gucci Mane & Keyshia Ka’Oir Speak On His Lean Addiction Before His Time In Jail: He Was All Over The Place + Rapper Opens Up About Going To Therapy

Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir recently dished on their relationship journey–particularly regarding how they dealt with the rapper’s legal and personal troubles over the years.

The pair began dating back in 2010, and they got married in 2017. Additionally, they welcomed their first child together, Ice Davis, in late 2020.

However, while the couple is currently in bliss, they had to deal with many relationship hurdles over the years. In the early years of their relationship, Gucci Mane was hit with various different charges and jail stints. While he was court-ordered to a psychiatric hospital in 2011 and racked up numerous assault charges over the next few years, it was his 2014 firearms conviction that really took its toll on Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir. As a result of this conviction, Gucci went to prison for two years.

Regarding his 2014 prison sentence, Gucci Mane told Billboard:

“When I went to prison, I knew that I was special. I knew I was unique, and I knew I had something to offer that a lot of people didn’t. When I got out I said, ‘I’m going to show everybody.'”

The couple went on to discuss how Gucci‘s lean addiction plagued him. Before his 2014 prison sentence, Gucci Mane was getting in physical altercations with fans and was falling out with various friends and connections. This lead to him being temporarily dropped from Atlantic in 2013 and getting into Twitter beefs with various other rappers, including Nicki Minaj and Yo Gotti.

Keyshia Ka’oir recalled:

“He was all over the place. It wasn’t a surprise for any of us. He was terrible at times.”

However, the couple also discussed how they were able to rely on each other to get through Gucci‘s 2-year prison sentence. According to the pair, Keyshia Ka’oir would speak to him multiple times every day of his sentence, providing constant reassurance. Additionally, she would send him organic groceries on holidays and even schedule her meals around his prison schedule. Ka’oir stated:

“I remember telling him over the phone, ‘Just allow me to love you and come home to me.’ And those were the words and the conversations and the emails that got him out safe.”

However, despite Ka’oir‘s reassurance, Gucci Mane was still in a dark place while behind bars. He claims that he would mistreat her from prison, saying he berated her online and went off on her after being in solitary confinement for two weeks. Gucci claimed:

“I was in such a bad place when I went to prison, and I just give her all the credit. She definitely is a blessing and I’m grateful for her. I don’t take her for granted.”

Gucci Mane then took the opportunity to discuss his experience with court-mandated therapy following his release. He claimed that he was curious about the prospect, saying:

“Everybody used to say that I was bipolar; I wanted to know if it’s true or not. [The therapist] told me I was fine. [She] suggested I don’t come anymore.”

However, Gucci says that the experience opened his eyes to the importance of therapy and that he has his own therapist now. Additionally, he took a moment to address how important one’s mental health is and how the stigma has to be undone. He stated:

“There’s a stigma that we have to get past, especially in the Black community. Everybody needs to take care of their mental health and shouldn’t be ashamed if they’re going through something and reach out to a professional.”

They also reflected on how much Gucci Mane has changed over the years. Rather than prioritizing the trap lifestyle, he has grown into a man who puts his family and businesses first. According to Ka’oir:

“He doesn’t travel with a gun anymore. When we first met, the gun was on his lap at all times. Now, he’s definitely a businessman.”

It looks like Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir have come a long way with each other–and they seem happier than ever about it!
