mahu melepaskannya“Jangan tinggalkan ayah Zahra???Novel : 143 Tiada Penghujungnya 5 Oleh : Permata NilamBab 5 “Aduhhh…” Dia menatap luka di dahinya Bukan setakat luka tapi turut lebam Perlahan – lahan ditampalnya plaster pada luka tersebut Dia mengerang kecil menahan rasa sakit Seketika dia tercengat di depan cermin menatap dirinya “Berani dia cederakan muka sehandsome nie” tuturnya sendirian Dimatanya terbayang wajah pucat gadis itu Daniel tersenyum sendiri menampakkan lesung pipinya Dalam rasa marah ada juga rasa lucunya Buat pertama kali dia dipertemukan dengan gadis yang begitu cekal dan nekad Gadis yang mampu melindungi dirinya sendiri Paling nyata gadis itu langsung tidak tertarik dengan dirinya seperti gadis – gadis lain yang menyesakkannya Daniel menarik nafas panjang “Daniel jom makan” kedengaran suara perempuan memanggilnya Daniel melepaskan keluhan kecilnya Beberapa minit kemudian dia sudah berada di ruang makan Nenek Jah tersenyum menyambut kedatangan cucu tunggal kesayangannya itu “Kenapa dengan dahi Daniel tu” Pandangannya tepat pada dahi anak muda itu Daniel tersenyum lalu melabuhkan punggungnya berhadapan dengan perempuan tua itu Persoalan itu dibiarkan sahaja “Daniel bergaduh lagi ke”Dia hanya tersenyum“Daniel bergaduhkan” diulangi pertanyaan itu lagi“Tak ler nek Seorang kawan tak sengaja baling batu kat dahi Daniel petang tadi Agaknya dia tak suka tengok Daniel” ceritanya bernada gurauan“Lelaki ke perempuan kawan tu” Daniel berpandangan dengan Nek Jah Dia hanya senyum Susah baginya untuk berterus terang “Nek rasa mesti perempuan Masakan kawan lelaki nak baling – baling batu pula Lagipun orang lelaki tak pernah pun cederakan cucu nek nie” teka Nek Jah dengan andaian sendiri Daniel tertawa sendiri Sememangnya bicara neneknya itu betul“Daniel lapar ler nek jom makan” Nek Jah cukup faham dengan perangai cucu kesayangannya itu Bukan dia tidak pernah menegur perangai Daniel yang selalu bergaduh itu cuma Daniel yang degil tidak mahu mempedulikannya “Lain kali perkenalkan kat nenek kawan perempuan tu Mesti dia gadis yang baik” luah Nek Jah dengan mata yang bersinar – sinar Daniel tersedak Cepat – cepat dia meneguk air di gelas Dia mengurut – urut dadanya Permintaan Nek Jah itu terlalu tinggi “Baik ke dia Ganas semacam je” bisiknya “Gadis yang tak suka lebih – lebih kat Daniel tu ler yang baik berbanding dengan mereka yang tergila – gilakan Daniel” “Nek macam tahu – tahu pula apa yang Daniel fikir” luahnya berterus terang “Nek dah cukup kenal dengan Daniel Makan ler nasi tu” Daniel patuh sahaja tidak mahu dia cakap lebih – lebih risau Nek Jah akan fikir yang bukan – bukan Paling penting dia tidak mahu perempuan itu tahu bagaimana perkenalannya dengan gadis itu Nanti tidak pasal – pasal dia akan dimarah Daniel menatap bukunya Terus sahaja meletakkan kepalanya pada bantal empuk itu Tenang matanya menatap siling “Gadis yang tak suka lebih – lebih kat Daniel tu ler baik berbanding dengan mereka yang tergila – gilakan Daniel” suara neneknya terngiang – ngiang di telinganya Daniel tersenyum sendiri################ “Daniel apa hal dengan dahi kau tu” Farhan hairan menatap Daniel Sudah dijangkanya tampalan di dahinya ini pasti mengundang persoalan rakan – rakannya “Ada sedikit hal berlaku semalam” jelasnya Mereka beriringan melangkah ke kelas “Daniel tengok siapa di depan tu” Daniel melontar pandangan ke hadapan Gadis itu sedang melewati mereka Tampak tenang Langsung tidak menghiraukan keadaan di sekelilingnya Seakan ada dunia indahnya sendiri Daniel tersenyum sendiri Ada rasa cemburu dihatinya “Dangerous girl” luah Daniel Farhan tertawa Tidak sangka itu yang bakal di dengarnya dari mulut Daniel “Tak pernah aku jumpa perempuan sedegil dia” “Kau juga seperti dia Sekurang – kurangnya buku telah bertemu ruas” usik Farhan Dibiarkannya sahaja bicara rakannya itu berlalu Anak matanya masih menyoroti langkah gadis itu “Memang dia gadis yang berbisa” bisiknya sendirian Aku meletakkan beg di bahuku di kerusi Kutoleh kiri kanan mencari kelibat Fatin Umie mahupun Zatul Masing – masing belum kelihatan lagi Kulirik jam di tanganku Barangkali belum sampai lagi Kukeluarkan buku catatan menyemak bagi mempastikan segala tugasan telah diselesaikan “Morning …”suara Zatul memenuhi ruang kelas Aku melontar pandangan ke muka pintu Zatul Fatin dan Umie baru sahaja sampai “Awal kau hari nie Liya” sapa Umie seraya mengambil tempat duduklnya di hadapanku “Aku tak dapat tidur nyenyak semalam” luahku Mereka menatapku “Kenapa” suara Zatul sentiasa mendahului dari yang lain “Aku rasa hari nie macam ada malapetaka je” tuturku selamba Masing – masing terkejut mendengar bicaraku Aku tersengih Rasanya peristiwa semalam tidak akan dibiarkan begitu sahaja Daniel ada agenda terbaru untukku “Aku bergaduh dengan Daniel semalam Dahinya luka” ceritaku ringkas “Apa Dahi Daniel luka Kau buat apa dengan dia” berderet soalan keluar dari mulut Zatul Apa lagi bulat anak matanya menatapku Masing – masing tergamam mendengar cerita yang aku sampaikan Mungkin di luar jangkaan mereka aku dapat mencederakan pelajar terhebat dan termasyhur di sekolah ini Sebenarnya aku pun tidak menyangka akan bertindak sejauh itu Terasa segalanya berlaku sepantas kilat Semuanya tidak dirancang “Aku baling batu tepat – tepat kena dahi dia” sambungku bercerita disambut dengan keluhan mereka “Kau betul – betul mengundang malapetaka Liya Daniel tak mungkin akan lepaskan kau begitu saja” tutur Zatul melepaskan keluhan Aku diam Terasa aku telah masuk ke dala mulut harimau Masing – masing diam “Dia pun ada buat salah kat aku” bidasku membela diri Kalau Daniel tidak menyimbah mukaku dengan lumpur semua ini tidak akan terjadi Kalau dia tidak membocorkan rahsianya bahawa dialah gerangan si pemandu kereta sport merah itu pasti aku akan melupakan peristiwa itu Semua ini salah Daniel juga Dia yang sengaja minta dihukum “Apapun kau kena bersedia dengan sebarang kemungkinan Kalau boleh elakkan dari bertembung dengan dia Harap – harap Daniel takkan cari kau” luah Zatul berdoa Tidak sedap hati juga aku mendengar bicara Zatul itu“Kenapa ler budak tu muncul dalam hidupku” keluhku sendirian Walau apapun berlaku aku mesti hadapi Daniel dengan berani Dia juga manusia biasa seperti aku Jadi tidaklah menakutkan sangat untuk berhadapan dengannya Aku menarik nafas panjang Daniel nampaknya memang ditakdirkan kita bermusuhan Loceng berdering kuat Waktu persekolahan untuk hari ini sudah sampai penghujungnya Aku mengemaskan buku – bukuku ke dalam beg“Jangan lupa siapkan tugasan yang cikgu beri hari nie” suara Cikgu Ghazali guru Pengajian Am“Baik cikgu” sahut suara ramai“Berdiri semua”“Terima kasih cikgu” Cikgu Ghazali sudah melangkah ke pintu Disusuli oleh rakan – rakan sekelas yang lain Masing – masing bersaing mendahului meninggalkan kelas Aku seperti biasa akan membiarkan mereka pergi dahulu kemudian baru aku menyusuli“Liya kami akan melindungi kau”Aku menoleh Fatin Umie dan Zatul sudah terpacak di sisiku Aku tertawa terasa lucu sangat dengan gelagat mereka“Percayalah takde apa – apa akan berlaku nanti” tuturku yakin“Daniel tu selalu bertindak di luar jangkaan” tutur Zatul memperingatkan aku“Nie kawasan sekolah ler Dia tak akan berani apa – apakan aku Kamu balik ler” arahku“Betul ke nie” soal Umie meminta kepastian Aku mengangguk“Kalau kau terjumpa Daniel nanti terus lari tau” ujar Zatul memperingatkan aku Aku tertawa kecil“Aku serius nie Liya Jangan lupa lari tau” ulang Zatul lagi Aku hanya mengangguk“Balik ler” arahku lagi“Kami pergi dulu Liya Hati – hati” nasihat Fatin Aku senyum Kusoroti langkah mereka sehingga hilang dari pandangan mata Aku mencapai begku Kuatur langkah meninggalkan kelas yang masih dihuni oleh beberapa orang rakan yang nampak sibuk melangsaikan tugasan hari iniAku berjalan santai menuruni anak tangga blok yang menempatkan kelas – kelas pelajar Tingkatan Enam Beberapa blok bangunan sudah kulewati sebelum sampai ke garaj tempat letaknya basikal yang dikhaskan untuk kemudahan pelajar – pelajar yang berbasikal“Dania Deliya” Ada suara perempuan memanggilku Aku mematikan langkahku lalu menoleh ke belakang Seorang gadis yang tidak kukenali datang mendekatiku“Apa yang kau buat kat Daniel Kau ingat diri kau tu hebat sangat ke” suaranya tegang dan bernada keras Tanpa salam perkenalan dia terus sahaja menyerangku Aku menatapnya hairan“Aku nak bayar hutang kau kat Daniel Nah” Tiba – tiba sahaja dia menghayun tangannya kuat hampir – hampir menyentuh pipiku Mujur sempat aku menangkapnya Kugenggam kuat tangan itu“Awak tak malu ke pukul kaum sendiri hanya kerana seorang lelaki” tuturku tegas Dia menarik tangannya Kedengaran dengusan kuatnya“Lepaskan tanganku” pintanya“Daniel tak layak menerima sebarang pembelaan Kalau awak tak mahu dia disakiti lagi tolong beritahu dia jangan ganggu hidup aku lagi Hari nie aku lepaskan awak tetapi kalau kejadian seperti hari nie berulang lagi aku boleh buat awak rasa seperti yang Daniel alami sekarangku” tegasku mengancamnya dengan pandangan yang cukup tajam“Shit Perempuan jantan” kutuknya Kulepaskan tangannya Aku tersenyum sinis“Ingat pesanan aku tadi okey” Kutinggalkan gadis itu dengan senyuman sinis Biar dia bertambah sakit hati“Perempuan bodoh Konon nak bela lelaki yang tak guna tu” rungutku sendirian Aku mendengus Betapa marahnya aku Kenapa ada perempuan yang sanggup membelanya sedangkan memang layak Daniel diperlakukan sedemikian Daniel tidak layak untuk mendapat layanan yang baik Dia bukan baik sangat pun Panas hatiku berlanjutan sehinggalah aku sampai di halaman rumah Mulutku tidak berhenti – henti mengomel sendirian mengutuk Daniel dan gadis itu Sungguh aku tidak dapat menerima hakikat seorang gadis sanggup cuba memukul gadis lain semata – mata kerana seorang lelaki Tidak sedarkah bahawa dia telah menjatuhkan martabatnya sendiri maruah seorang gadis Memang tidak dapat diterima akal“Liya apa benda yang dirungutkan tu” Aku tersentak Pantas aku berpaling Abang Zekri hairan menatapku“Hey abang Zek buat terkejut Liya je Abang tak de kuliah ke hari nie” soalku semula“Hari nie cuma ada satu kelas toturial je pagi tadi” jelasnya Itulah istimewanya kalau dapat belajar di universiti Abang Zekri kata selain kuliah jadual yang lain boleh ditentukan ikut pilihan sendiri bersesuaian dengan waktu yang disenaraikan oleh pensyarah Kalau mahu berehat mahupun melakukan aktiviti yang dirancang Sebab itulah ada segelintir mahasiswa dan mahasiswi sempat buat kerja ‘part time’ Kata abang Zekri lagi di universiti tidak sesusah yang dibayangkan Kalau rajin dan berdisiplin pasti berjaya menggenggam segulung ijazah Seronoknya kalau dapat belajar di universiti “Petang nie Liya free tak Abang nak pi memancing kat sungai depan sana Liya nak ikut tak” pelawanya Aku berfikir seketika mempertimbangkan pelawaan abang Zekri Seronok juga kalau pergi memancing Sekurang – kurangnya aku boleh bersantai dan mengisi masa lapang hari ini tetapi tugasan yang diberikan oleh cikgu Ghazali harus juga diselesaikan“Liya nak pegi tapi abang Zek janji akan tolong Liya siapkan tugasan P A Liya” pintaku tanpa segan silu“Ohh… takde masalah” putus abang Zekri bersetuju Aku apa lagi tersenyum meleretlah Bukan perkara baru aku melibatkan abang Zekri dengan kerja – kerja sekolahku Dia guru dan sumber rujukanku Malah idolaku untuk mendorongku terus belajar Hubungan kami memang rapat bagai adik – beradik Bahkan ayah kata Mak Munah ibu abang Zekri ibarat ibuku sendiri Ayah memang banyak terhutang budi kepada Mak Munah kerana turut menjagaku semasa kecil khasnya ketika ayah bekerja Ibu terlalu awal meninggalkan aku dan ayah Tika ayah terkial – kial mengambil alih tugas seorang ibu tika itulah Mak Munah menawarkan dirinya untuk menolong ayah menjagaku Sebab itulah Mak Munah dan Pak Lah prihatin dan sayangkan aku seperti dia sayangkan abang Zekri Begitu juga dengan ayah abang Zekri sudah dianggap seperti anak sendiri Jadi bolehlah dikatakan aku ayah abang Zekri Mak Munah dan Pak Lah adalah sekeluargaSeumur hidup ini juga abang Zekri tidak pernah menyakitkan hatiku malah jelas sekali dia sentiasa melindungiku Aku tidak akan melupakan jasa keluarga itu kepadaku dengan ayah“Jangan lupa petang lepas Asar nanti kita pegi”“Okey” Aku dengan senang hati menyetujui sahaja rancangan abang Zekri Pasti tiada halangan untuk aku pergi bersama abang Zekri Seperti jangkaanku ayah langsung tidak membantah ketika aku mendapatkan keizinan daripadanya Ayah percaya abang Zekri boleh menjaga dan melindungikuTepat pada masa yang dijanjikan aku dan abang Zekri bergerak ke destinasi yang dituju Sepanjang perjalanan kami bersaing ingin mendahului perlumbaan Aku mengayuh basikalku sepantasnya Tidak mahu kalah dengan abang Zekri Aku tidak mahu abang Zekri menewaskan aku dengan mudah Sekurang – kurangnya aku mahu jadi pencabar hebatnya“Daniel tengok tu tu kan Dania” Boney menunding jari kepada gadis dan seorang pemuda yang tampak riang mengayuh basikal Gadis dan pemuda itu baru sahaja melewati mereka sedang melepak di warung itu“Rupa – rupanya dia dah ada pak we Boleh tahan juga pak we dia” puji Farhan Daniel tersenyum sendiri Dia masih menatap gadis dan pemuda itu yang kian hilang dari pandangan matanya“Aku boleh rampas dia daripada pemuda itu” tuturnya penuh keyakinan Farhan dan Boney tertawa“Daniel kau dengan dia tak pernah pun berbaik Rasanya tak semudah itu dia akan tertarik dengan kau” balas Farhan Daniel tertawa“Kau cabar aku Okey … mari kita bertaruh Aku jamin sebelum kita tinggalkan alam persekolahan nie dia akan bersama denganku bukan sebagai sahabat tetapi sebagai kekasih Pasti dia akan jatuh hati denganku Kamu tengoklah nanti” tutur Daniel penuh yakin“Okey … siapa yang menang dalam pertaruhan nie akan dapat apa sahaja yang diminta Setuju” tanya Farhan Daniel mengangguk Begitu juga dengan Boney Tangan ketiga – tiga pemuda itu bersatu tanda perjanjian termeterai Daniel tersenyum Ada misi yang perlu dilaksanakannya sekarang” Sedikit meninggi suara Hanani.“Dah seminggu kita exam.Tolonglah lepaskan aku.Aku terpena saat itu. Akhirnya aku terpaksa menerima hakikat bahawa rantai tangan itu telah hilang. Ayah telah memberinya semasa kali terakhir sebelum dia menghembuskan nafas terakhir.adalah kerana tanpa sedar sering juga terpaut hati kepada lelaki baik itu dan lelaki baik ini dengan harap mereka menjadi suami saya. kamu ada menaruh hati kepada dia. STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: September 7, 2004The Kennedy Space Center, reeling from widespread wind and water damage caused by Hurricane Frances, will remain closed to normal work until Monday at the earliest while engineers complete a detailed damage assessment. The Vehicle Assembly Building lost hundreds of side panels, creating holes in the facility’s structure. Photo: Steven Young/Spaceflight NowUpdating initial damage reports Monday, center Director James Kennedy said today that Frances ripped off some 820 panels measuring 4-by-16 feet each on the east and south sides of the Vehicle Assembly Building, an area covering more than 52,000 square feet. About 20 percent of that total included lost sub-surface insulation panels, leaving gaping “windows” into the building’s interior that are open to the elements.”That concerns us a lot,” he said. “The facilities engineering people today don’t think that between now and the possible arrival of (Hurricane) Ivan as early as next Saturday there is anything they can do to plug those holes.”So we will probably be, for the next period of time, including Ivan if she comes ashore, sitting there with an open window to the world in the VAB.”The sides of the building were not the only sites of damage. A 30-member team inspecting the roof of the cavernous structure had to beat a hasty retreat when they discovered “it was very insecure,” Kennedy said.”It was soggy, it was weak and they did not want to run the risk of falling through the roof of the VAB,” he told reporters.Netting is being strung up inside the building just below the roof to catch any debris that might fall until repairs can be made. Workers pile up the VAB debris. Photo: Steven Young/Spaceflight NowA nearby tile processing facility, where the shuttle’s thermal protection system tiles and blankets are manufactured and processed, suffered extensive damage, losing about a quarter of its roof.”Our shuttle TPS facility was hit hard,” Kennedy said. “It makes the thermal protection system tiles and blankets and that facility has what I would estimate at about 25 percent of its roof ripped off. This is very critical to any kind of a schedule we might hope to achieve on shuttle. The tile production, the TPS production was on the critical path.”NASA managers are looking into whether the work can be temporarily moved to Palmdale, Calif., where the shuttle fleet was built, or possibly to Houston until the building can be rebuilt.Loss of the tile facility alone could hamper NASA plans for launching the shuttle Discovery next March on the first post-Columbia shuttle mission. Many observers believed that date was going to be difficult to meet even before Frances struck, because of technical issues associated with implementing safety upgrades. Little reserve time was left in the processing schedule and it’s not yet clear how repairs to the VAB and the tile facility might affect that work.Kennedy declined to speculate.”I’m not going to estimate when we might return to flight,” he said. “It’s very much to be determined, the impact that the facility damage will have on our ability to return to flight. We’ll be working with the shuttle program people over the coming weeks to help assess that.”While damage to the VAB and the tile facility were the focus of attention today, other facilities suffered as well. A three-story computer facility near the VAB and orbiter processing facilities lost a large portion of its roof, but computer hardware on the third floor had been covered last week and appears to have survived intact. The press site grandstand lost most of its roof. Photo: Steven Young/Spaceflight NowLess important but visually dramatic, the roof of the grandstand at the KSC press site, where the world’s media covered the Apollo moonshots and shuttle launchings, was ripped off as well. And a visitor’s center building housing a refurbished Saturn 5 moon rocket also suffered heavy damage, losing 25 to 30 percent of its roof.”The truth of the matter is many, many buildings have siding and roofing damage, water leaking situations and there’s going to be an awful lot of work to repair the damage that’s been done,” Kennedy said.Even so, he was relieved the damage wasn’t more extensive. Last week, Kennedy was worried that Frances, then a category 3 hurricane, could make a direct hit on the space center.”We are very fortunate to have had the limited damage that we’ve experienced from hurricane Frances,” he said today. “There was a time a week ago when some of us worried about the future of human spaceflight, at least, with the potential of the loss of orbiter vehicles, with the loss of international space station hardware.”I’m proud to tell you that although we’ve had some minor issues with hardware, the hardware being processed for the shuttle and the station is secure and in good shape.”Additional coverage for subscribers:AUDIO:TUESDAY’S KSC/CCAFS HURRICANE DAMAGE NEWS BRIEFING VIDEO:FOOTAGE OF DAMAGE AROUND KENNEDY SPACE CENTER Ares 1-X PatchThe official embroidered patch for the Ares 1-X rocket test flight, is available for purchase.Apollo CollageThis beautiful one piece set features the Apollo program emblem surrounded by the individual mission logos.Expedition 21The official embroidered patch for the International Space Station Expedition 21 crew is now available from our stores.Hubble PatchThe official embroidered patch for mission STS-125, the space shuttle’s last planned service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, is available for purchase. | | | | 2014 Spaceflight Now Inc.Delta 4 rocket rolls out to launch padThe United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket that will deploy the U.S. military’s fourth Wideband Global SATCOM communications spacecraft into orbit in January was transported from the Horizontal Integration Facility to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral’s Complex 37 on the afternoon of Monday, October 10.A 36-wheel, diesel-powered transporter moved the 170-foot-long rocket the short trip down the road and up the pad’s ramp to begin preparations for the WGS 4 mission.Initial assembly of the rocket, including mating of the cryogenic upper stage with the Common Booster Core first stage using a precision laser alignment system, was completed in the Horizontal Integration Facility. Technicians will finish putting the vehicle together at the launch pad by installing the four strap-on solid rocket boosters and attaching the satellite payload. When completed, this Delta 4 Medium+ (5,4) rocket will tower 217 feet tall for its January 19 launch that continues the Air Force’s efforts to upgrade the military’s main communications infrastructure. This 3-page gallery of photographs captures the rollout event.Photo credit: /Spaceflight NowJapanese infrared space observatory goes into orbitBY STEPHEN CLARKSPACEFLIGHT NOWPosted: February 21, 2006 The M-5 rocket blasts off with ASTRO-F. Credit: JAXAA new infrared telescope was put in orbit by Japan today to begin an 18-month mission to conduct a comprehensive all-sky survey that should detect light from up to ten million objects scattered throughout the Universe. The ASTRO-F observatory lifted off at 2128 GMT (6:28 a.m. local time Wednesday). The spacecraft was flown intoorbit using a three-stage solid-fueled M-5 rocket that launched from theUchinoura Space Center near Kagoshima, Japan, on the southern tip ofKyushu Island. The 2,100-pound, twelve-foot tall satellite was deployed from the thirdstage of the M-5 booster just eight-and-a-half minutes after its speedy pre-dawnblastoff. Early indications are that the craft was placed in the plannedinitial 98-degree inclination Sun-synchronous orbit around Earth with amaximum altitude of about 455 miles and a low point of 189miles. ASTRO-F will later use an apogee kick motor to circularize its orbit.Renamed “Akari” after its on-orbit delivery, the ASTRO-F observatory willspend an anticipated one-and-a-half years performing an all-sky survey atinfrared wavelengths. Akari, which means “light,” will attempt to build upon work done by theInfrared Astronomical Satellite over 20 years ago. That mission – led by the United States, United Kingdom, and theNetherlands – carried out the first comprehensive infrared survey, allowing scientists to create a group of detailed atlases including manyof the targets detected by IRAS.ASTRO-F will attempt to improve upon the results obtained by IRAS by atleast one order of magnitude, and officials expect an upgrade inresolution will also paint a better picture of the Universe forastronomers.Plans are to split the ASTRO-F mission into three distinct phases afterthe two-month checkout period is completed. The first phase willconcentrate on accomplishing the all-sky survey during the first sixmonths of the operations. Following will be another ten months ofprimarily targeted pointing observations of specific areas of interest asdetermined by a team of scientists from around the world. The lifetime of the prime mission is determined by the availability ofliquid helium stored in a cryostat aboard the satellite. The nearly 45gallons of cryogenics are necessary to chill the 27-inch aperturetelescope and science instruments to near absolute zero at six degreesKelvin (-450 degrees Fahrenheit). Calculations show the helium will lastfor around 550 days before being exhausted. The super-cold temperatures are needed to increase the sensitivity of theobservatory’s instruments to detect miniscule disparities in lightemissions across the sky. Mechanical coolers are also carried aboardASTRO-F to continue limited observations using the near-infrared camerafor up to five years. An artist’s concept shows the ASTRO-F spacecraft deployed in orbit. Credit: JAXAAstronomers will use ASTRO-F to study a variety of objects across theUniverse, including active star-forming galaxies that can only be spottedusing infrared telescopes. Up to ten million galaxies should be seen bythe craft’s cameras by essentially looking back in time to the earlyhistory of the Universe.ASTRO-F will also look through thick veils of cosmic dust that hidenewborn stars from Earth-based telescopes that rely on visiblewavelengths. The study of elusive brown dwarf stars are also on thelaundry list of scientific aims for the mission. Such objects are notmassive enough to begin fusion to be officially classified as a true star, and ASTRO-F scientists hope to be able to pin down accurate masses andnumbers for brown dwarves in our galaxy.Another goal of the mission is to find forming extra-solar planetarysystems by detecting infrared radiation from dust disks surrounding starswithin 1,000 light years of Earth. Also, up to 50 new comets will bedetected by ASTRO-F, scientists say.Two additional secondary payloads were also trucked into space by the M-5rocket. However, the outcome was not immediately announced for either project.A tiny CubeSat known as CUTE-1.7 is supposed to work in orbit forseveral months before being manually disposed. The diminutive eight-poundsatellite carries amateur radio equipment, and is being used as a trainingtool for students at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.CUTE-1.7 utilizes a handheld personal digital assistant as the principalon-board computer, and carries three small magnetic torque devices forthree-axis attitude control. At the end of its mission, the nanosatellitewill deploy a 300-foot electrically charged tether to for a de-orbit test.Another apparatus catching a ride to space aboard the M-5 rocket was adeployment test mechanism containing a solar sail made of aluminizedpolymer film that was supposed to deploy a maximum diameter of around 35 feetbeginning just over eighteen minutes after liftoff. Two cameras positionednear the device would capture images of the critical unfurling of the solarsail for downlink to the ground. The experiment is a follow-up to asub-orbital test conducted in 2004.The launch was the second successful orbital mission for Japan in fourdays after Saturday’s of the larger H-2A rocket thatcarried the multi-purpose MTSAT-2 satellite into space. Three out of fivespace launches thus far in 2006 have originated from Japan.Telescopes.comLargest selection and the best prices anywhere in the world. See gallery .0305 GMT (11:05 p.m. EDT Wed.)Genesis’ science canister loaded with the solar wind samples was transported by helicopter from the impact site to a holding area next to a specially constructed cleanroom on the Utah base, NASA announced late Wednesday.Foil wrapping was removed from the canister and dirt brushed off before the canister was moved into the cleanroom for analysis of the contents. The Genesis team will begin examining the canister on Thursday morning. The capsule plunged into Earth’s atmosphere at 1552:47 GMT (11:52:47 a.m. EDT) and entered the preplanned entry ellipse in the Utah Test & Training Range as predicted. However, the drogue chute and parafoil failed to deploy, causing the craft to smack the ground at a speed of 193 miles per hour. The impact occurred near Granite Peak on a remote portion of the range. No people or structures were anywhere near the area, NASA said.Meanwhile, NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe released a statement on Wednesday’s landing mishap:”We’re encouraged by the news out of Utah, despite the hard impact landing of the Genesis Sample Return capsule. The spacecraft was designed in a way to give us the best chance at salvaging the valuable science payload should we suffer a landing like the one we witnessed today.”Our re-entry plan was based on safety, and the choice of Dugway was intentional. While today’s developments may be disappointing to some, I know the entire NASA family is thankful no one was injured.”Exploration of the heavens is not an easy task. Our ability to travel throughout our solar system is limited, whether by human tended or robotic craft. Genesis was an experiment to journey far from home and return with new clues and possible answers to some of the fundamental questions regarding the origin of our universe.”With each new mission, we push the frontiers of our knowledge and technology, and we’re hopeful that what appears to be a setback, will eventually return some impressive results. After all, this isn’t an Olympic event where we’re awarded a medal for a perfect landing. Our final achievement will be measured by what we’ve learned over the entire three-year mission.”Our scientists and engineers across NASA and our Jet Propulsion Laboratory are the best in the world. We will find out what happened to Genesis, and we’ll continue our quest to accomplish the goals spelled out in our Vision for Space Exploration.”WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2004A small spacecraft carrying priceless samples of the sun crashed into the Utah desert today when its stabilizing parachute failed to deploy, bringing an innovative $264 million mission, NASA’s first sample return flight since the Apollo moonshots, to a disappointing end. The Genesis sample return canister, carrying atoms from the sun that were blown into space as part of the solar wind, was to have been plucked out of mid air by a helicopter flown by a Hollywood stunt pilot over the Utah Test and Training Range. But a drogue chute needed to stabilize the craft before deployment of its large parafoil never fired and the craft slammed into the ground at about 193 mph. Video showed the canister half buried in the Utah desert, largely intact. It was carrying 20 to 30 micrograms of solar wind material, the equivalent of a few grains of salt. The atoms were embedded in fragile glass-like wafers. Read our full .2004 GMT (3:04 p.m. EDT)The recovery lead official says the 420-pound capsule is expected to be dug out by shovels and returned to the cleanroom later today.Workers will try to man-handle the craft into a cargo net for transport. If that is unsuccessful, they will attempt to extract the solar wind canister out of the capsule.1859 GMT (2:59 p.m. EDT)The project manager says there shouldn’t be a total loss of mission science.1856 GMT (2:56 p.m. EDT)A spacecraft official says none of the pyrotechnics have fired. Therefore, the fault could involve the system used to sense the G-loads to trigger an onboard timer for deployment of chutes, or the electronics that sent commands to fire the pyros or loss of Genesis’ battery power.1853 GMT (2:53 p.m. EDT)Teams at the impact site are working to safe and secure the unfired pyrotechnics and an onboard battery that could release sulfur dioxide. The capsule must be dug out of the ground. It will be decided later whether to remove the internal science canister holding the solar wind samples or attempt to keep the capsule in one piece to be ferried to nearby facilities.1850 GMT (2:50 p.m. EDT)With science canister cracked open, it remains unknown how useful the solar wind samples will be given the contamination from the Earth environment. Plans had called for the capsule to be recovered in mid-air and flown to a cleanroom to prevent contamination.1847 GMT (2:47 p.m. EDT)The director of helicopter flight operations was one of the people to inspect the capsule at the impact site. He says the capsule hit on its side and is half way buried into the desert floor. It is leaning 10 degrees from vertical. The chute deployment mortar did not fire. The capsule is “slightly breached” by a few inches from the impact, he said. The science portion of the capsule containing the solar wind samples appeared breach too.1843 GMT (2:43 p.m. EDT)The impact speed is estimated at 193 mph. The capsule landed within the targeted ellipse-shaped entry zone.1841 GMT (2:41 p.m. EDT)The news conference underway. NASA says an investigation board will be appointed within 72 hours. Precautions are being taken to handle the capsule because the ordnance used to deploy the chute and parafoil has not yet fired.1730 GMT (1:30 p.m. EDT)Soon after Genesis was launched in August 2001, engineers noticed potential problems with a battery in the probe’s sample return canister. The canister crashed today in the Utah desert when it’s stabilizing parachute failed to deploy. The cause of the mishap is not yet known and it may have nothing to do with the battery problem noted early in the mission. But for the record, here is part of a November 15, 2001, news release from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory that addressed the issue:Project managers are monitoring the temperature of the battery inside Genesis’ sample return capsule to make sure that long-term heating does not impair its performance when the capsule returns to Earth in September 2004. Although the battery is likely to become hotter than originally expected, the flight team has a number of options for managing the battery’s temperature, and they do not expect the issue to affect the mission. The mission’s science requirements call for 22 months of solar wind particle collection. “In our current plan Genesis will meet and exceed that goal, collecting up to 26 months’ worth of solar wind particles,” said Chet Sasaki, Genesis project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. The temperature of the lithium-dioxide battery is currently at 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit), within the range anticipated by spacecraft designers. A radiator device intended to shield the battery is not working as well as expected, however, and the battery is likely to heat up to 42 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit). Mission managers consider this temperature to be within acceptable limits. They note that similar batteries have been maintained at 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) for 15 months without impairing their performance. Ground tests are being conducted on lithium batteries to measure their durability at various temperatures. The Genesis project team has been attempting to bake potential contaminants off the battery’s radiator by heating the area. They are doing this with the spacecraft’s sample return backshell opened just enough to allow gas trapped inside the capsule to escape, while still avoiding exposure to the Sun.1722 GMT (1:22 p.m. EDT)The NASA news conference from the Utah landing site is scheduled to begin at 1830 GMT (2:30 p.m. EDT).1633 GMT (12:33 p.m. EDT)A small spacecraft carrying priceless samples of the sun crashed into the Utah desert today when its stabilizing parachute failed to deploy, bringing an innovative $264 million mission, NASA’s first sample return flight since the Apollo moonshots, to a disappointing end. Read our .NASA has ended its live video feed from the landing site. We will post additional information as it becomes available. A news conference is coming up later today.1630 GMT (12:30 p.m. EDT)Mission control reports the navigation and targeting of the capsule for reentry was on the mark. However, a failure aboard the capsule prevented the chute and parafoil to deploy. That resulted in the capsule’s impact.NASA plans to hold a news conference later this afternoon.1627 GMT (12:27 p.m. EDT)Additional personnel are en route. They will safe the capsule for its removal from the impact crater.1625 GMT (12:25 p.m. EDT)There is nine people at the impact site now to survey the situation. One is taking up-close imagery.1624 GMT (12:24 p.m. EDT)Tracking teams are preserving all of their data for the failure investigation.1622 GMT (12:22 p.m. EDT)The recovery forces at the impact site report the chute never deployed. Therefore, they are treating the capsule as a “hot” craft since the mortar could still be armed. 1620 GMT (12:20 p.m. EDT)Here is what should have happened:Just over two minutes since entry interface the capsule would be at an altitude of 108,000 feet as a mortar aboard the capsule fired, releasing the 6.7-foot drogue parachute to provide stability to the capsule until the main chute is released. The capsule’s heat shield will rapidly cool during this subsonic portion of the descent.About four minutes later, three pyrotechnic bolts were to release the drogue chute from the capsule at an altitude of about 22,000 feet. As the drogue chute moved away, it would extract the capsule’s main chute, a 34.6- by 12.1-foot parafoil. Full inflation of the parafoil would occur in about 6 seconds. Once inflation is complete, the parafoil and its payload will begin a slow, loose spiral descent through the skies of the Utah Test & Training Range. However, the capsule was in a tumble and none of the chutes deployed to slow the capsule. That thwarted any mid-air recovery.1618 GMT (12:18 p.m. EDT)Mission control says the mortar may still be armed, having failed to fire during descent. Another scenario is the mortar fired and the drogue chute deployed only to break off as the craft plunged back to Earth.1617 GMT (12:17 p.m. EDT)Personnel are walking toward the capsule but keeping their distance due to concerns about the mortar being live.1615 GMT (12:15 p.m. EDT)The chopper crews have been told to be cautious. The mortar that should have fired on the capsule to deploy the chute may still be armed.1615 GMT (12:15 p.m. EDT)The recovery helicopters that were supposed to snag the returning Genesis capsule have now landed next to the capsule.1614 GMT (12:14 p.m. EDT)NASA officials hope there is enough of the capsule intact to determine what caused the chute deployment failure. Whether the solar wind samples will yield any science value remains to be seen. Scientists had said the samples had to be kept in ultra-clean conditions to preserve the information. However, the capsule is significantly broken as it sits on the desert floor after a high-speed impact.1610 GMT (12:10 p.m. EDT)Recovery forces are moving toward the capsule, which has made a very spectacular crater. 1609 GMT (12:09 p.m. EDT)An overhead view of the impact point shows the capsule half-buried on its side. The craft appears to be badly damaged.1605 GMT (12:05 p.m. EDT)There is no indication what might have caused Genesis’ problem. NASA says there will be an investigation to determine why the speed-slowing chute and parafoil failed to deploy.1604 GMT (12:04 p.m. EDT)Mission control says without the drogue chute and subsequent parafoil, the capsule would hit the ground at about 100 mph.1602 GMT (12:02 p.m. EDT)NASA’s Genesis sample return capsule has suffered a major anomaly during its homecoming today, failing to release its chute and parafoil to slow the descent for a mid-air recovery. The craft plunged into ground a high rate of speed. The status of the solar wind samples is not yet known.1601 GMT (12:01 p.m. EDT)The impact point is 40.07 degrees by 113.30 degrees in Utah.1559 GMT (11:59 a.m. EDT)The capsule is half buried into the ground. But it appears to be mainly intact.1558 GMT (11:58 a.m. EDT)IMPACT! The capsule has slammed into the Utah desert after failing to deploy its chute and parafoil.1557 GMT (11:57 a.m. EDT)The Genesis sample return capule is rapidly tumbling with no chute.1557 GMT (11:57 a.m. EDT)The capsule appears to be tumbling!1555 GMT (11:55 a.m. EDT)After one minute of atmospheric descent, the capsule should be at an altitude of 197,000 feet as the heat shield temperature reaches a peak temperature of 4,500 degrees F.Slightly over 10 seconds later, the capsule will be exposed to about 30 G’s, the greatest deceleration it will endure during Earth entry. During this time period, the capsule’s heat shield will lose an estimated about 7 pounds, or about 6 percent of its weight, as a small amount of the ablative material erodes away with the heat generated during entry through the atmosphere.1554 GMT (11:54 a.m. EDT)The capsule has been spotted high over the planet! The Genesis sample return capsule has hit the upper fringes of Earth’s atmosphere 400,000 feet above the planet for its trek home. The capsule contains samples of the solar wind that were collected a million miles from Earth during the three-year Genesis mission.About 45 seconds after entry interface, the capsule will be exposed to a deceleration force threetimes the force of Earth gravity, or 3 G’s. This arms a timer that is started when thedeceleration force passes back down through 3 G’s. All of the parachute releases areinitiated from this timer. 1550 GMT (11:50 a.m. EDT)Tracking systems are operating to acquire the capsule as it falls back to Earth. As the capsule descends through the atmosphere, it will be “painted” by powerfulradars located on the Utah Test & Training Range. This will provide tracking informationallowing ground-based cameras to spot the capsule.Backup tracking is providedby a Global Positioning System unit on the Genesis capsule that transmitsposition data to a ground station, which in turn relays the information to the missioncontrol center. The radar, visual and GPS data will provide an accurate plot in threedimensions for the capsule’s location. This plot is generated at the mission control centerlocated about 100 miles away from the range at Hill Air ForceBase. A ground control intercept officer based at the Hill Air Force Base mission controlwill direct helicopter flight crews towards the capsule.1545 GMT (11:45 a.m. EDT)Now 10 minutes from the time Genesis will begin atmospheric entry over northern Oregon. The capsule plunge to the atmosphere at a velocity of approximately 24,700 miles per hour. The only human-madeobject to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at a higher speed was the Apollo 10 commandmodule, which reached 24,861 mph.Genesis will be stabilize with its nose down because of the location of its center of gravity, its spin rate and its aerodynamic shape.1542 GMT (11:42 a.m. EDT)The primary capsule recovery chopper, called Vertigo, reports it is three minutes from reaching its standby position in the sky over Utah.1537 GMT (11:37 a.m. EDT)The helicopters are now 6,200 feet in altitude.1535 GMT (11:35 a.m. EDT)”The lead helicopter will deploy an 18-1/2-foot pole with what you could best describe as anoversized, space-age fishing hook on its end,” said Roy Haggard, chief executive officerof Elsinore, Calif.-based Vertigo Inc. and director of helicopter flight operations. “When we make the approach we wantthe helicopter skids to be about eight feet above the top of the parafoil. If for some reasonthe capture is not successful, the second helicopter is 1,000 feet behind the firstone and setting up for its approach. We estimate we will have five opportunities toachieve capture.”1533 GMT (11:33 a.m. EDT)A military Blackhawk helicopter is escorting the primary and backup capture helicopters. The three choppers are flying toward a spot 7.5 miles away from the recovery position at an altitude of 10,000 feet where they will wait for Genesis.1530 GMT (11:30 a.m. EDT)The capsule is currently high above the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast, mission control says. It is scheduled to hit the atmosphere for reentry in about 25 minutes.1525 GMT (11:25 a.m. EDT)Both the primary red-colored “Vertigo” helicopter and the backup blue-painted “South Coast” choppers have just taken off from their staging point in Utah. They will fly into position for the upcoming retrieval of Genesis. It is a beautiful, clear morning at the recovery zone.1520 GMT (11:20 a.m. EDT)The choppers have started up. Each specially outfitted helicopter has a three-person crew.1518 GMT (11:18 a.m. EDT)The pilots are making final preparations for takeoff. There are two helicopters ready to retrieve the Genesis capsule — one primary and one backup. They will have time to make about 5 tries to grab the descending capsules.1515 GMT (11:15 a.m. EDT)To recap the events that occurred earlier this morning, here is NASA’s overview:Sept. 8, 2004, will be a busy one for the Genesis team. It begins around 0800 GMTwhen NASA’s Deep Space Network transmits a command to the spacecraft to initiate acomputer sequence that will later release the sample return capsule.About 1030 GMT, pyro devices will fire to sever two cable bundles connecting thespacecraft to the capsule, and the hinge connecting the two vehicles will retract.Starting about 1045 GMT, the spacecraft spins itself up to 10 revolutions perminute. The spinning will provide the unguided sample return capsule with additionalstability during entry. The spacecraft then rotates to the proper orientation for releaseand spins up to 15 revolutions per minute. Shortly thereafter, six push-off springs willpush the sample return capsule away from the spacecraft at a rate of 0.914 meters persecond (3 feet per second, or slightly over 2 miles per hour). Capsule release will takeplace at approximately 1153 GMT at an altitude of about 65,896 kilometers(40,946 miles).Approximately 22 minutes after separation, the Genesis spacecraft will fire its thrustersto reorient itself for a divert burn. This time lapse allows the sample return capsule tomove away from the spacecraft to avoid re-contact between the two.1500 GMT (11:00 a.m. EDT)The sample return capsule is barrelling toward Earth’s atmosphere having successfully separated from the main body of the Genesis spacecraft earlier this morning. The capsule, which contains the precious collection of solar wind samples, has no propulsion system — it is simply aimed to the precise trajectory “keyhole” for entry into the atmosphere with no way to abort the homecoming now.Mission navigators expect the capsule to hit the top of Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of 400,000 feet around 1555 GMT (11:55 a.m. EDT). The target “keyhole” is roughly 20.5 miles long and 6.2 miles wide over the Pacific Ocean. If the capsule enters the atmosphere anywhere inside this corridor, it will come down over the designated spot on the Utah Test & Training Range, NASA says. After its fiery plunge through the atmosphere, a series of chute and a large parafoil will slow the capsule in preparation for a mid-air recovery by a helicopter.TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2004NASA’s Genesis satellite completes its three-year, 20-million mile voyage through space in dramatic fashion Wednesday when a capsule containing samples of solar wind returns to Earth for a mid-air capture by Hollywood helicopter stunt pilots. The $260 million mission will bring back tiny particles that streamed from the Sun, allowing scientists to determine what was in the cloud of gas and dust from which the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.The Genesis sample return capsule will enter Earth’s atmosphere at 1555 GMT (11:55 a.m. EDT) over Oregon. Two minutes and one time zone later, the capsule will deploy its drogue parachute at 108,000 feet over the vast alkali flats and sagebrush of the U.S. Air Force’s Utah Test and Training Range. Waiting 97,000 feet below will be two helicopters and crew bearing the space-age equivalent of a fisherman’s rod-and-reel, as NASA puts it.”From the time the drogue deploys it will take about 18 minutes for the capsule to reach a height where we can get to it,” said Genesis prime pilot Cliff Fleming of South Coast Helicopters, Santa Ana, Calif. “When we are up there that may feel like a long 18 minutes but we have been training for this moment since 1999, so in the grand scheme of things another quarter-hour or so shouldn’t matter much.”An important milestone in the mission was met Monday, when the Genesis spacecraft performed its final trajectory maneuver before capsule release. The spacecraft passed the Earth-Moon orbit at about 0900 GMT (8 a.m. EDT) Monday, traveling at about 2,700 miles per hour.”Our Deep Space Network is allowing us to keep a close eye on our spacecraft and its samples of the Sun,” said Genesis project manager Don Sweetnam of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “It is right where we planned it to be. Everything is go. The navigators and engineers here at JPL are go, and the recovery team out in Utah is go, too.”Genesis is NASA’s first sample return mission since Apollo 17 returned the last of America’s lunar samples to Earth in December 1972.According to current models, the solar system formed when a massive cloud of gas and dust collapsed under its own gravity. Most of this mass went into what became the Sun, while other gravitational disturbances in the collapsing nebula led to the formation of smaller bodies that eventually became planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. For years, scientists have sought to determine the composition of that original nebula and compare it to the composition of other solar system bodies to see how those bodies have evolved over time. The best way to do this is to study the composition of the Sun which, given its huge mass, is the body most likely to have retained its original composition. Scientists have already determined the Sun’s composition to some by looking for the unique spectral signatures of elements embedded in sunlight. However, even the best spectroscopic observations do not provide planetary scientists with the precision they need to compare the Sun’s composition with that of other solar system bodies. To accomplish this scientists need actual samples of the Sun they can study in the lab. While a mission to the Sun itself to obtain samples is not technically feasible, there is a far easier and less expensive alternative. The Sun emits a steady stream of particles known as the solar wind, made of material from the Sun’s upper atmosphere. By collecting samples of the solar wind, one is essentially capturing the same material that made up the protosolar nebula. To accomplish this, Genesis launched in August 2001 and flew to the Earth-Sun L1 Lagrange point, about 1 million miles sunward of the Earth. This location, a common place for stationing spacecraft that study the Sun, is also free of the Earth’s magnetic field, allowing Genesis to study the solar wind without interference. Genesis spent about two and a half years there, completing wide, looping halo orbits of L1. While there, the spacecraft deployed several ultra-pure wafers of gold, sapphire, silicon and diamond that were designed to capture particles entrained in the solar wind. Different collectors were to be used depending on whether the solar wind is fast or slow, or if a coronal mass ejection — a type of solar storm — is taking place. Ion and electron detectors on the spacecraft categorized the nature of the solar wind and determined what collector arrays should be deployed at a given time. In addition to the collector arrays, Genesis also carried a solar wind concentrator. This concentrator was designed to increase the concentration of oxygen and nitrogen ions collected by the spacecraft. Oxygen is of particular interest to scientists because they have measured different ratios of the most common oxygen isotope, O16, to two heavier versions, O17 and O18, on different solar system bodies, but do not know what the original oxygen isotope ratios were in the protosolar nebula. After completing its collection of the solar wind, Genesis left its L1 halo orbit in April. The spacecraft performed a distant flyby of the Earth and then circled the Earth-Sun L2 point, behind the Earth, to set up for a daytime reentry over the western U.S.Before it could touch down on Earth, however, the capsule will be captured in mid-air by helicopter so that the impact of landing does not damage the solar wind samples. Once on Earth, the samples will be taken to a special facility at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where scientists will study them with advanced laboratory equipment to determine their composition and draw conclusions about what was in the protosolar nebula. Scientists have high hopes that the solar wind returned by Genesis will help them resolve some key mysteries about the solar system.”Genesis will return a small but precious amount of data crucial to our knowledge of the Sun and the formation of our solar system,” said Donald Burnett, principal investigator of Genesis. “Data from Genesis will provide critical pieces for theories about the birth of the Sun and planets.” Ares 1-X PatchThe official embroidered patch for the Ares 1-X rocket test flight, is available for purchase.Apollo CollageThis beautiful one piece set features the Apollo program emblem surrounded by the individual mission logos.Expedition 21The official embroidered patch for the International Space Station Expedition 21 crew is now available from our stores.Hubble PatchThe official embroidered patch for mission STS-125, the space shuttle’s last planned service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, is available for purchase. | | | | 2014 Spaceflight Now Inc.H-2A launch timelineSPACEFLIGHT NOW

Posted: December 9, 2010 SpaceX has unveiled the identity of the mystery payload packed aboard the Dragon spacecraft during yesterday’s orbital flight.”Before the successful launch, voyage, and recovery of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, the first time in history a commercial company has recovered a spacecraft from orbit, reporters were buzzing with news of a ‘secret’payload’ stowed on board,” SpaceX announced in a statement. “It was a payload so secret, SpaceXers made it Top Secret (think Val Kilmer 1984, not official US Government),” the company said.”So what was inside the mystery package? A camera mounted on the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage recorded these views of its descent into the Atlantic Ocean following a July 14 launch from Cape Canaveral. Credit: SpaceXThe July 14 launch with six Orbcomm communications satellites was the first time video from an on-board camera clearly showed key milestones in the descent, such as two ignitions of a subset of the first stage’s Merlin 1D engines to slow down the rocket and guide it to the recovery zone. The video also shows the rocket’s four carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb landing legs deploying moments before falling into ocean.A similar video of the first stage’s descent during a Falcon 9 launch in April was obscured by a poor live communications link.A SpaceX spokesperson said Wednesday there were no plans to release video of the descent from other vantage points. SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s private jet and a NASA WB-57 surveillance plane were in the area to monitor the rocket’s descent and could have recorded video. The rocket’s engines are designed to adjust their throttle settings to achieve a gentle splashdown.SpaceX plans to make the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage reusable in a bid to reduce the costs of launches.”This test confirms that the Falcon 9 booster is able consistently to re-enter from space at hypersonic velocity, restart main engines twice, deploy landing legs and touch down at near zero velocity,” SpaceX said in a statement accompanying the video release.Recovery crews in the Atlantic Ocean were ready to retrieve the rocket stage after splashdown, but SpaceX says the booster broke apart moments after splashdown.”After landing, the vehicle tipped sideways as planned to its final water safing state in a nearly horizontal position,” SpaceX said. “The water impact caused loss of hull integrity, but we received all the necessary data to achieve a successful landing on a future flight.”Musk called the loss of hull integrity a “kaboom” in a tweet after the launch. He later posted that a data review indicated the stage’s structural break-up was caused by a “body slam, maybe from a self-generated wave.”The Falcon 9 rocket’s performance limitations will keep engineers from attempting ocean landings on the launcher’s next two missions, which are slated to carry the AsiaSat 8 and AsiaSat 6 telecom satellites into geostationary transfer orbit, a high-altitude orbit stretching up to 22,300 miles above Earth.Built by Space Systems/Loral, both satellites for Hong Kong-based AsiaSat weigh more than 3 metric tons at launch. The first launch with AsiaSat 8 is set for Aug. 4.”At this point, we are highly confident of being able to land successfully on a floating launch pad or back at the launch site and refly the rocket with no required refurbishment,” SpaceX said. “However, our next couple launches are for very high velocity geostationary satellite missions, which don’t allow enough residual propellant for landing. In the longer term, missions like that will fly on Falcon Heavy, but until then Falcon 9 will need to fly in expendable mode.”SpaceX’s first two launches to geostationary transfer orbit — with the SES 8 and Thaicom 6 satellites in December and January — also did not include first stage landing attempts.Falcon 9 launches for Orbcomm, which operates its satellites in low Earth orbit about 400 miles up, and SpaceX’s resupply missions to the International Space Station do not take up all of the rocket’s lift capacity, leaving leftover fuel for experimental maneuvers after the first stage’s main job is done.SpaceX said the next water landing attempt will be on the 13th flight of the Falcon 9, which is scheduled for launch as soon as Sept. 12 with a Dragon cargo capsule for the space station.Officials are targeting the following two Falcon 9 flights this fall as the first missions to try a landing on a solid surface.Follow Stephen Clark on Twitter: .STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. The view from a camera on the rocket shows the second stage engine firing. Credit: SpaceXA year after its maiden flight met a disastrous end, the SpaceX booster lifted off at 9:10 p.m. EDT (0110 GMT Wednesday) from a remote launch pad on Omelek Island, part of a U.S. Army base at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.Controllers lost contact with the Falcon during the burn of the second stage that would have placed the rocket into orbit around Earth.”We did encounter, late in the second stage burn, a roll-control anomaly,” Elon Musk, founder and chief executive officer of Space Exploration Technologies Corp., said in a post-launch call with reporters.Live video from cameras mounted aboard the rocket’s second stage showed increasing oscillations about five minutes after liftoff, just before the public webcast was cut off. The rolling prevented the necessary speed to achieve a safe orbit, instead sending the stage on a suborbital trajectory back into the atmosphere.Musk speculated leading candidates for the roll control problem included a helium leak or a failure of a roll control thruster. Both would be relatively easy to fix, he said.”Of all the possible causes, there’s very few that would really take much effort to address,” Musk said.Burning highly refined kerosene and liquid oxygen, the first stage’s Merlin engine produced nearly 80,000 pounds of thrust as it gracefully guided the rocket through clouds on an eastward trajectory from its launch site in the central Pacific Ocean. The Merlin drained its supply of propellant within three minutes, and the Falcon 1 shed its first stage a few seconds later. The upper stage then fired its Kestrel engine for a planned six-and-a-halfminute burn to place the rocket into low Earth orbit. But engineers stopped receiving live radio signals from the second stage several minutes prior to its scheduled arrival in orbit.Musk said the stage reached an altitude of about 200 miles when the roll oscillation caused the Kestrel engine to shut down.”The high likelihood is that it re-entered after less than a full orbit,” Musk said. The rolling motion could have caused the second stage’s propellant to slosh outward like a centrifuge, which would lead to the engine switching off, Musk said. The Falcon 1 was targeting an orbit stretching from 205 miles to 425 miles in altitude with an inclination of about 9 degrees. Engineers had programmed the second stage to conduct a second burn about 45 minutes into the flight to demonstrate the engine’s capability to reignite.Despite the control problem that doomed the mission’s goal of reaching orbit, Musk said he was pleased with the progress made by the company since the Falcon’s maiden test flight ended in failure last year.”I think I’ll characterize this as a very good day for SpaceX,” Musk said. “We successfully reached space and really retired almost all the risk associated with the rocket. So I feel very good about where things are.”Much of the risk with rocket launches come from engine operations and stage separation systems, and Musk said those performed well in Tuesday’s flight.”I would say we’ve retired probably in excess of 90 percent of risk associated with the rocket,” Musk said.”It definitely could have gone a little better today, but if we’ve retired almost all the risk associated with the rocket, I think it is hard to characterize that (as) anything but a success, at least in my book, because this is a test launch of the rocket and not a satellite launch,” he said.Bankrolled by the fortune of Musk, a technology mogul and co-founder ofthe online payment system PayPal, SpaceX designed and built the Falcon 1rocket to significantly lower the cost of space launches and revolutionizethe space industry. The 70-foot-tall booster came within moments of blastoff during Tuesday’s first attempted countdown, but computers ordered a dramatic last-second abort when the rocket’s first stage Merlin engine showed signs of trouble after ignition.Countdown software detected the engine’s chamber pressure was slightlybelow normal, but that was likely due to chilled rocket-grade kerosenefuel being fed into the engine, according to Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vicepresident of business development. The launch team opted to load warmer fuel into the first stage fuel tanksand try again, and the countdown proceeded smoothly until clocks reachedzero.”This was a pretty nerve-racking day, to say the least,” Musk said. “Therocket business is definitely not a low-stress business, that’s for sure.”SpaceX officials said they remain confident in their plans to launchpaying customers’ payloads as soon as this year.”We’ve been in touch with our customers,” Musk said. “They are veryexcited by the results of this test, and so we feel really good.”The next launch of the Falcon 1 was scheduled for August carrying to orbit the TacSat 1 tactical research satellite for theNaval Research Laboratory. A subsequent mission to launch a MalaysianEarth-observation spacecraft was planned for late this year. But before those launches are given the all-clear, SpaceX will first haveto study what caused the problem encountered during Tuesday’s mission andfix it.Two small NASA experiments were bolted atop the upper stage duringTuesday’s launch. The Autonomous Flight Safety System was an instrumentdesigned to detect problems during rocket launches and automaticallyactiviate a flight termination system, which would bring down the rocket beforeit endangers the public. An inexpensive transmitter linked with NASA’s network of tracking and datarelay satellites was also aboard the rocket to beam live telemetry back tothe rocket’s control room.Engineers had also planned to demonstrate the Falcon 1’s satelliteseparation system by jettisoning a small 4.5-pound aluminum ring afterarriving in orbit.SpaceX’s second launch came a year after the Falcon 1 rocketsuffered a major failure during its maiden flight. Investigatorstraced the cause of that accident to a corroded aluminum nut in the firststage propulsion system, which triggered a fuel leak that led to apremature shutdown of the Merlin engine about 30 seconds after liftoff.SpaceX engineers overhauled countdown procedures and added upgrades to thefirst stage Merlin engine to increase reliability, according to thecompany’s Web site.Tuesday’s demonstration flight was sponsored by the Pentagon’s DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency under its program to develop responsivespace technologies such as low-cost small satellite launch vehicles. The booster’s first stage was fitted with a parachute recovery system, allowing it to slowly drop into the Pacific Ocean a few hundred milesdownrange from the Omelek launch pad. SpaceX positioned a ship to retrievethe spent rocket stage in hopes of refurbishing it for reuse on a futuremission.Musk said there should be no problems recovering the spent stage becauseit performed well and was dropped in the designated area.”We’ll be doing a thorough examination of that piece of hardware,”Shotwell said. “It’s not as easy to determine how well you did unless youcan actually (recover) the hardware.”Eleven more missions are currently manifested for SpaceX’s Falcon rocketfamily, and the contracts are valued at nearly $400 million, Shotwellsaid. In addition to the Falcon 1 booster, SpaceX is developing a much largerrocket to carry heavier satellites into orbit. Company officials expectthe Falcon 9 rocket to debut as early next year. The Falcon 1 can haul satellites up to about 1,270 pounds into low Earthorbit, while the Falcon 9 should be capable of delivering about 22,770pounds to low Earth orbit and up to 10,000 pounds to geostationarytransfer orbit, a popular destination for communications satellites, according to the SpaceX Web site. Also on the drawing boards is the Falcon 9 Heavy, which is expected tolaunch more than 60,000 pounds to low Earth orbit. That version could flyby 2010.SpaceX sells the Falcon 1 for as little as $6.7 million, while the Falcon9 price ranges from about $27 million to $78 million, according to companyofficials.SpaceX is also planning to begin launching missions from Cape Canaveral,Fla., and Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., by 2009.Three Falcon 9 launches are already on the books as test flights forNASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program. The programaims to partner with the private sector to create spacecraft to supply theinternational space station after the agency’s space shuttle fleet isretired in 2010.SpaceX was awarded a contract worth $278 million from the program inAugust, and the company plans to use its Dragon space capsule for thethree demonstration missions.Oklahoma-based Rocketplane Kistler also won a $207 million contract fromNASA and is developing a reusable launcher and orbital spacecraft foranother series of test flights by 2010.The remainder of SpaceX’s launch backlog includes six commercial payloadsand two launches for the U.S. military. Our play-by-play coverage of Tuesday’s launch and an extensive transcript from Musk’s post-flight call with reporters can be found .And a collection of images from the launch is posted .Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. You can read it .WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 20070630 GMT (2:30 a.m. EDT)A collection of images from the launch is posted .0545 GMT (1:45 a.m. EDT)The Falcon 1 rocket, a gleaming symbol of hopes to revolutionize space exploration through private industry, took its second shot at orbit Tuesday night but fell back to Earth after experiencing a problem mid-way through the ascent.Read our .0410 GMT (12:10 a.m. EDT)More post-launch news briefing quotes from Elon Musk:Question: What is the significance of today’s launch?”I think it’s really a big step forward for SpaceX. It gives me great confidence in our upcoming launches. Another thing to bear in mind, Falcon 1 is intended as a scale model, a test vehicle of our larger rockets. As we iron things out on Falcon 1, we’re really going to put that knowledge to work on Falcon 9.”Question: What is realistic aspiration for SpaceX some 10 years from now?”I feel very confident 10 years from now that we can be putting both satellites and people into orbit, and maybe beyond (Earth) orbit. I feel very confident in the future of commercial spaceflight, private spaceflight and I think this bodes very, very well actually for achieving some of the goals that I mentioned. It is really an excellent indicator that a small company can achieve great things….We had what I would call a relatively minor issue with the roll-control very late in the flight. But all the really big risk items, the ones we were most concerned, have been addressed. If you look at the early history of rocketry, I think they had something like 12 Atlas failures before the 13th one was successful. To get this far on our second launch being an all-new rocket — new main engine, new first stage, new second stage engine, new second stage, new fairing, new launch pad system, with so many new things — to have gotten this far is great.”0345 GMT (11:45 p.m. EDT Tues.)More post-launch news briefing quotes from Elon Musk:Question: Was the loss of telemetry associated with the roll-control problem?”It is very speculative at this point. It is hard for me to say. I think that is a possible cause.”Question: What was the debris seen floating away from the second stage engine?”What you might have seen was basically titanium half-hoops that are used to stabilize the nozzle on ascent. However, once you get to a certain temperature the bonding agent for those titanium rings comes off and the titanium rings float away, which occurred as expected.”Question: Do you expect to fly another test flight before starting operational launches?”We feel that there is really no need for an extra test flight…We really retired all of the major risk events, the ones we were most concerned about. So I really doubt there is any need for a third test flight. The next flight will be the TacSat mission, which is a Naval Research Lab satellite funded by the Office of Secretary of Defense. I don’t anticipate another test launch before that mission.”Question: Have you received assurances from both customers for this year — TacSat and the Malaysian RazakSat spacecraft?”I believe so. Certainly from RazakSat, and the TacSat folks have been on record before as saying no matter what happened to our second launch they were with us. So I assume that remains the same.”Question: What caused the roll oscillations?”I can speculate there are a few possible causes. It is could be a helium leak or it could be…we have a cold gas roll-control system, it could be that there was a problem with one of the roll-control jets. But it is difficult to say anything definitive until we have a close look at the telemetry…The only thing we can say definitely at this point is that there was a roll anomaly on the second stage that resulted in us not achieving the intended orbit and, like I said, not likely a full orbit. However, that is fairly easy thing to address. Certainly if it is a leak issue we’ll go over and make sure that any potential leaks are addressed in spades. If it’s roll-control, one of the cold gas thrusters, I think that would be a very easy thing to address as well. Of the possible causes, I think there’s very few that would really take much effort to address.”Question: Will the telemetry tell you enough to give you confidence for next launch with real payload?”I think so. It is hard to predict right now but I find it difficult to imagine a circumstance where it wouldn’t, where we wouldn’t know enough. What we will do at this point is if the telemetry is ambiguous as to the source of the issue, we’ll identify all of the possible sources and address all possible sources.”Question: Do you know the apogee of the orbit?”Well the maximum altitude was approximately 300 km.”Question: Was the second stage intact when it re-entered?”I don’t know quite yet. The stage was certainly intact at the loss of telemetry.”Question: Could the stage have fallen in a populated area?”No. One of the advantages of being at (Kwajalein) is it’s ocean for thousands and thousands of miles.”Question: Why would rolling cause premature engine shutdown?”If you have a significant roll, what could happen is that the propellants can centrifuge out.”0315 GMT (11:15 p.m. EDT Tues.)Some quotes from the media briefing with Elon Musk following tonight’s launch:Question: What is the fate of the second stage?”We didn’t achieve the desired orbit. But at this point I don’t exactly know the fate of the second stage. We got to 300 km. That’s about all I know at this point.””All that I can say for sure right now is it’s not in the intended orbit. The likelihood is that it re-entered after probably half an orbit or so.””The roll-control anomaly did cause the second stage to shut off prematurely. So that’s not achieving the intended orbit. However, I would say we’ve retired probably in excess of 90 percent of risk associated with the rocket. And it is worth noting, this was a test launch not a satellite launch.”Question: How disappointed are you?”This was a pretty nerve-wracking day, to say the least…The rocket business is definitely not a low-stress business, that’s for sure. I don’t think I’m disappointed actually. I’m actually pretty happy, so I’m sorry if I’m not conveying that…It definitely could have gone a little better today, but if we’ve retired almost all the risk associated with the rocket, I think it is hard to characterize that (as) anything but a success, at least in my book, because this is a test launch of the rocket and not a satellite launch. I think if it had been a satellite launch, you know, one could perhaps argue differently. But in terms of it being a test launch, the question being have we…learned essentially everything we need know to deliver a satellite successfully to orbit, I think the answer is absolutely. We’ve learned everything we need to know to deliver a satellite successfully to orbit.”0245 GMT (10:45 p.m. EDT Tues.)The following is a transcript of SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s opening comments to reporters:”I think I’ll characterize this as a very good day for SpaceX. We successfully reached space and really retired almost all the risk associated with the rocket. So I feel very good about where things are.”I feel extremely good about having successful satellite launches later this year, especially when I know we’ve got two satellite launches lined up for later this year — one is a Defense Department satellite and the other a Malaysian space agency satellite. We’ve been in touch with our customers. They are very excited by the results of this test, and so we feel really good actually.”The things we were most concerned about were the first stage ignition and liftoff, the trajectory, the first stage because that goes through the most difficult portion of the atmosphere where you can have high winds and potentially go unstable or potentially have a structural problem and that went flawlessly. We had zero anomalies whatsoever on the first stage.”Stage separation also went very well. Separation events are the No. 2 killer of rockets after engine issues. Both the stage separation and fairing separation went flawlessly. Second stage ignition also was perfect, and we achieved steady state burn on the second stage.”We did encounter, late in the second stage burn, a roll-control anomaly, which you may have seen on the video webcast. We feel that is something that’s pretty straightforward to address. So all in all we feel pretty good about this launch. “This was a test launch, which I think most people are aware. So, yes, I think it was a pretty good test.”0220 GMT (10:20 p.m. EDT Tues.)Musk promises to provide additional information later tonight about whether a low orbit was achieved or if the rocket re-entered.0218 GMT (10:18 p.m. EDT Tues.)”I think it is fair to characterize this as a success,” Musk says.0214 GMT (10:14 p.m. EDT Tues.)Musk says 90 percent of the Falcon 1 rocket’s technical challenges were proven out with this launch. He doesn’t foresee needing another test flight before launching the first operational mission in late summer carrying the U.S. military’s TacSat 1 spacecraft. 0204 GMT (10:04 p.m. EDT Tues.)Musk says “the high likelihood” is the vehicle re-entered the atmosphere prior to making an orbit.0156 GMT (9:56 p.m. EDT Tues.)Musk says the rocket didn’t reach the intended orbit and actually may have re-entered the atmosphere. The rolling motion caused the second stage engine to shut down early. Despite the problem, Musk considers this to be “a very good day” for SpaceX.0154 GMT (9:54 p.m. EDT Tues.)”We did have a roll-control anomoly,” Musk says of the second stage. Some oscillations could be seen in the last bit of video from a camera mounted on the second stage before the webcast stopped. Fate of the rocket remains unknown.0145 GMT (9:45 p.m. EDT Tues.)SpaceX founder Elon Musk will be addressing the media momentarily.0140 GMT (9:40 p.m. EDT Tues.)No further information is available at this time. To recap, the Falcon 1 rocket blasted off at 0110 GMT (9:10 p.m. EDT) tonight on a demonstration test flight from Omelek Island in the central Pacific Ocean. The first stage engine, which had experienced an abort on the pad earlier tonight due to low chamber pressure readings, powered the rocket skyward for nearly three minutes. The spent stage then separated for a planned parachute-aided splashdown in the ocean for recovery. The second stage ignited and the rocket’s nose cone jettisoned as the ascent continued. About two minutes into the second stage firing, a SpaceX spokeswoman said the stream of telemetry data from the rocket had been lost and the company’s webcast showing video from cameras mounted on the rocket was turned off.The fate of the rocket is not known. The second stage was supposed to fire until almost T+plus 10 minutes to reach the planned orbit featuring a high point of 425 miles, a low point of 205 miles and inclination of 9 degrees north and south of the equator.0124 GMT (9:24 p.m. EDT Tues.)”I just wanted everybody to know that we in the Washington, D.C., office are celebrating with champagne. We don’t have any information yet from the launch control center, but the Falcon clearly got to space with a successful liftoff, stage separation, second stage ignition and fairing separation,” says Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development. However, what happened during the second stage burn is not clear.”Regardless, we’re thrilled here.”0119 GMT (9:19 p.m. EDT Tues.)The last bit of video seen from a camera mounted on the second stage showed perhaps some oscillations just before SpaceX said telemetry had been lost and the webcast feed was cut.0116 GMT (9:16 p.m. EDT Tues.)We’re awaiting further information.0115 GMT (9:15 p.m. EDT Tues.)T+plus 5 minutes, 5 seconds. The low pressure was caused by the fuel being colder than desired, she said. The refueling of the rocket is supposed to correct this problem for the next launch try tonight.0043 GMT (8:43 p.m. EDT Tues.)Topping of the rocket’s liquid oxygen supply is being performed.0040 GMT (8:40 p.m. EDT Tues.)Time to launch is now 30 minutes.0039 GMT (8:39 p.m. EDT Tues.)Propellant loading for the first and second stages is underway.0037 GMT (8:37 p.m. EDT Tues.)Refueling of the rocket is about to begin.0035 GMT (8:35 p.m. EDT Tues.)Officials are coordinating a fresh countdown starting from the T-minus 16 minute mark at 0054 GMT (8:54 p.m. EDT) for a liftoff of Falcon at 0110 GMT (9:10 p.m. EDT).0033 GMT (8:33 p.m. EDT Tues.)Fuel offloading is being completed.0030 GMT (8:30 p.m. EDT Tues.)Local radar shows some rain moving toward the island.0025 GMT (8:25 p.m. EDT Tues.)Cloud cover beginning to roll across the island. It is past noon Wednesday local time on Omelek.0022 GMT (8:22 p.m. EDT Tues.)The low chamber pressure is believed to have been caused by the RP-1 kerosene’s temperature, Shotwell says. The launch team is draining some of the fuel and will reload the propellant for the next try.0021 GMT (8:21 p.m. EDT Tues.)Now starting the second stage fuel drainback.0019 GMT (8:19 p.m. EDT Tues.)The first stage fuel offload is starting.0018 GMT (8:18 p.m. EDT Tues.)The ground crew will be partially offloading fuel and reloading the propellant for another launch attempt.0017 GMT (8:17 p.m. EDT Tues.)The available launch period ahead is 0028 to 0114 GMT (8:28 to 9:14 p.m. EDT).0015 GMT (8:15 p.m. EDT Tues.)The launch team is setting up for a recycle of the countdown to try again tonight.0012 GMT (8:12 p.m. EDT Tues.)The abort was tripped when computers detected main engine chamber pressure was less than 0.1 percent lower than the redline limit, Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development, tells reporters. She added they are looking to recycle the countdown. Launch has not been scrubbed.0011 GMT (8:11 p.m. EDT Tues.)The Terminal Countdown abort procedures have been completed.0010 GMT (8:10 p.m. EDT Tues.)There is no word yet on what caused the countdown to be aborted in the final moments before liftoff. We’ve got a potential RF (radio frequency) compatibility issue with the payload, which we’re working through. I anticipate we will come out of the hold in about 10 or 15 minutes and get back on track,” says Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development.Weather conditions are acceptable at the launch site today, she added.2218 GMT (6:18 p.m. EDT)It appears launch time has been delayed further to 0005 GMT (8:05 p.m. EDT). 2215 GMT (6:15 p.m. EDT)Now SpaceX indicates the launch time has moved to 2330 GMT (7:30 p.m. EDT). 2210 GMT (6:10 p.m. EDT)SpaceX tells reporters that launch remains on schedule for 2300 GMT.2205 GMT (6:05 p.m. EDT)We’re still awaiting an update on SpaceX about the progress of the countdown. We’ll begin our play-by-play of the launch when information starts becoming available. 1601 GMT (12:01 p.m. EDT)SpaceX identified and corrected the software glitch that caused Monday’s launch delay, the company says, and liftoff has been rescheduled for 2300 GMT (7 p.m. EDT) today.”The abort that occurred a few minutes before T-0 was triggered by our ground control software. It commanded a switchover of range telemetry from landline to radio, which took place correctly, however, because of the hardware involved, this transition takes a few hundred milliseconds. Before it had time to complete, our system verification software examined state and aborted,” SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said today.”Our simulations done beforehand all passed, because the simulator did not account for a hardware driven delay in the transition. We considered putting the vehicle into a safe state yesterday and updating the ground control software to make the very minor fix needed, but the safer course of action was to stand down.”Yesterday afternoon and evening (Kwaj time), our launch team updated the software to address the timing issue and verified that there were no similar problems elsewhere. We ran the software through several simulated countdowns and then once again with the rocket and range in the loop.”Musk said all systems are now go for launch later today.0014 GMT (8:14 p.m. EDT Mon.)The launch team is preparing to start draining the fuel from the Falcon 1 rocket following today’s postponement. We’ll update this page when additional information about the problem and details of the next launch attempt are made available.0011 GMT (8:11 p.m. EDT Mon.)A new launch date has not been announced. But SpaceX says another try could be made on Tuesday or Wednesday.0010 GMT (8:10 p.m. EDT Mon.)SCRUB! Today’s launch attempt has been called off.0003 GMT (8:03 p.m. EDT Mon.)A possible explanation for the countdown abort being called:”At about a minute-and-a-half out of launch, we shift from communicating to the vehicle through the land lines to communicating through the Range RF (radio frequency). And it is possible we were just not picking up the Range RF signal. So that’s what I know so far,” says Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development.2355 GMT (7:55 p.m. EDT)The problem appears to be related to the Range and telemetry. The team needs another 10 minutes to examine the situation.2350 GMT (7:50 p.m. EDT)Engineers are working on the problem that stopped the countdown. SpaceX has time available to troubleshoot the issue and try the launch again — so the flight has not been scrubbed for today.2346 GMT (7:46 p.m. EDT)The launch team has completed the post-abort procedures to put the rocket into a safe configuration. There was no immediate word on what caused the countdown abort to be triggered.2344 GMT (7:44 p.m. EDT)The pad’s strong-back structure has rotated back into position next to the rocket.2343 GMT (7:43 p.m. EDT)”We have a Terminal Count abort. Stand by,” the launch team was just instructed.2343 GMT (7:43 p.m. EDT)ABORT. The countdown has been halted.2343 GMT (7:43 p.m. EDT)T-minus 2 minutes. Liquid oxygen system is being configured for launch. 2342 GMT (7:42 p.m. EDT)T-minus 3 minutes. All systems remain “go” for launch.2341 GMT (7:41 p.m. EDT)T-minus 4 minutes and counting. 2340 GMT (7:40 p.m. EDT)T-minus 5 minutes. 2339 GMT (7:39 p.m. EDT)T-minus 5 minutes, 55 seconds. Vehicle pyrotechnics are being readied.2338 GMT (7:38 p.m. EDT)T-minus 6 minutes, 30 seconds. The flight termination system has been confirmed ready. 2338 GMT (7:38 p.m. EDT)T-minus 7 minutes. The strong-back is fully retracted.2337 GMT (7:37 p.m. EDT)T-minus 8 minutes. 2336 GMT (7:36 p.m. EDT)The strong-back structure that has been against the side of the Falcon 1 rocket is now slowly lowering away from the vehicle. 2335 GMT (7:35 p.m. EDT)Countdown has entered the final 10 minutes to launch. 2333 GMT (7:33 p.m. EDT)T-minus 12 minutes. 2331 GMT (7:31 p.m. EDT)T-minus 14 minutes. The mission director reports he is “go” for launch. No further holds in the countdown are planned.2328 GMT (7:28 p.m. EDT)A status poll of launch team members indicated no problems.2325 GMT (7:25 p.m. EDT)T-minus 20 minutes and counting.2324 GMT (7:24 p.m. EDT)The loading of kerosene propellant and liquid oxygen into the two-stage Falcon rocket has been completed.2323 GMT (7:23 p.m. EDT)Range Safety reports the resticted areas around the launch site are clear for liftoff. Also, winds have been verified acceptable.2315 GMT (7:15 p.m. EDT)Now 30 minutes to launch of Falcon 1.2257 GMT (6:57 p.m. EDT)NEW LAUNCH TIME. Liftoff is now targeted for 2345 GMT (7:45 p.m. EDT). Fueling of the rocket had been suspended while trying to correct the data transmission problem between Omelek Island and the company’s headquarters in El Segundo, California. Only a limited part of the launch team is deployed to the remote location, with a larger group overseeing the mission from California. With the data stream now working, engineers are processing ahead with the countdown.2252 GMT (6:52 p.m. EDT)”The data is back up in El Segundo. I do believe we are a little bit behind in the count. I think we delayed some of the propellant loading activities,” says Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development. “It looks good for today, which is obviously good news.”How far behind the countdown is running or the target launch time isn’t clear at the moment.2229 GMT (6:29 p.m. EDT)”We’re still having data connectivity problems. The rocket is fine. Everything is good there. We’re still trying to determine whether we can launch without the data in El Segundo,” Shotwell says.2219 GMT (6:19 p.m. EDT)Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX vice president of business development, just told reporters following today’s launch that there has been some difficulty getting the telemetry stream from Omelek Island to the company’s headquarters in El Segundo, California. Shotwell indicated that the data transmission was a requirement for the launch to proceed today.2200 GMT (6:00 p.m. EDT)The final hour of the countdown should be getting underway. It is a sunny and windy day on Omelek Island. We expect a status from SpaceX momentarily. 1800 GMT (2:00 p.m. EDT)Launch of the Falcon 1 rocket remains targeted for 2300 GMT today. SpaceX plans to begin providing live updates to the news media one hour prior to launch. Watch this page for the latest as information becomes available.SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2007An update from SpaceX came late Sunday night, when the company announced the official launch attempt would be Monday at 2300 GMT (7 p.m. EDT).SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 2007A private space company’s second shot at flying its low-cost rocket into orbit could come as early as Monday after engineers successfully completed a critical pre-launch test firing of its main engine Thursday.Developed by Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the two-stage Falcon 1rocket currently stands ready for launch on a remote seven-acre island inthe middle of the Pacific Ocean. The SpaceX launch team cleared one of the final hurdles before launchThursday, when controllers loaded the booster’s first stage withpropellant and ignited the Merlin main engine for a static test firinglasting about four seconds.”We had a very successful static fire yesterday that proceeded smoothlywith no aborts,” SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said Friday in an updateposted on the company’s Web site. The launch team uncovered a small glitch in the rocket’s GPS guidancesystem shortly after the test, but the anomaly is not considered majorsince the Falcon 1 primarily relies on inertial navigation during itsflight, Musk said.Another update from SpaceX is expected Sunday, when the company isplanning to announce the official planned launch date. The Falcon 1 rocket will fly due east from its secluded launch pad onOmelek Island, part of the U.S. military’s missile test range at KwajaleinAtoll in the Marshall Islands. This week’s launch will be a demonstration mission for the Pentagon’sDefense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Two NASA-sponsored experimentpackages are bolted atop the booster’s second stage.Less than 10 minutes after launch, the Falcon 1’s second stage Kestrelengine should be commanded to cut off. SpaceX is targeting anorbit about 425 miles high with an inclination of about 9 degrees.SpaceX officials spent the past year wrangling with upgrades to the Falcon1 launch system after the first attempted flight of the new rocket endedin failure last March due to a rapid fuel leak in its first stage.A government investigation traced the cause of the leak to a corrodedaluminum nut in the first stage’s Merlin engine, which burns highlyrefined kerosene called RP-1 and liquid oxygen. The leaking fuel trickled down the outside of the Merlin’s thrust chamberand caused a fire after the engine ignited. The Merlin prematurely shutdown about 30 seconds after liftoff, and the 70-foot-tall rocket fell fromthe sky and plummeted into the ocean just offshore from the launch site.Last year’s failure caused SpaceX to implement several changes to therocket and overhaul much of the Falcon 1’s countdown operations. Engineersincreased the number of system aborts by a factor of 30, according toMusk.SpaceX also added upgrades to the Merlin main engine to make thepowerplant more robust, and new software was developed to conduct healthchecks of the Merlin after engine ignition before the seven-story talllauncher is released by hold-down clamps, Musk said. The return-to-flight launch was postponed from January due to an issuewith the second stage engine’s thrust vector control pitch actuator, whichpivots the engine’s nozzle to guide the rocket toward space. The problem, coupled with the unavailability of the Kwajalein Army Rangedue to another missile test, pushed the launch to this month.
STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: November 20, 2004CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA launched a $250 million quick-response satellite today to study enigmatic gamma ray flashes from brief-but-titanic deep space explosions that may be the “death cries” of massive stars imploding to form black holes. The Delta 2 rocket ignites on pad 17A. Photo: Carleton Bailie/BoeingThe Swift satellite’s 126-foot-tall Boeing Delta 2 rocket roared to life at 12:16 p.m. and quickly thundered away through a mostly clear sky. Arcing east over the Atlantic Ocean, the slender rocket put on a spectacular sky show for area residents and tourists as it climbed away toward space. It will take engineers about a month to check out and calibrate the satellite’s three gamma ray, X-ray and optical telescopes before scientific observations can begin. If all goes well, Swift will detect at least 200 gamma ray bursts during its two-year primary mission.Discovered during the Cold War by U.S. military spy satellites on the lookout for Soviet nuclear activity, gamma ray bursts are among the most perplexing phenomena in modern astronomy, the most powerful explosions since the big bang birth of the universe.”Every aspect of gamma ray bursts boggles the mind,” said principal investigator Neil Gehrels. “They’re very short flashes of gamma rays that last just a few seconds. But they’re very bright. They’re the brightest thing in the gamma ray sky when they’re going off.”If you had gamma ray vision, it would be like sitting in a dark room with a flash bulb going off a few times a day. They’re that bright.”So bright, in fact, they briefly shine with the intensity of a billion billion suns before quickly fading from view.”In scientific terms, it’s 10 to the power 52 ergs,” Gehrels said at a pre-launch news conference. “To put that into perspective, it’s more energy coming out in this short flash of gamma rays than the sun emits in its entire lifetime, billions of years, at all wavelength bands.”How can you possibly make so much energy in such a short amount of time? We don’t really know,” he said.Because gamma ray bursts appear so bright and evolve so rapidly, astronomers initially thought whatever was producing them must be relatively nearby, somewhere within or around the Milky Way galaxy. But satellite observations in the mid 1990s showed the bursts were, in fact, extra-galactic, occurring at extremely remote distances. That meant the explosions that produce the gamma rays must be truly titanic by even astronomical standards.”It’s only about seven years ago that astronomers learned that gamma ray bursts were not local but they came from outside of our galaxy, that they were, in fact, cosmic events, not local events,” said Anne Kinney, a senior science manager at agency headquarters. “People were very resistant to this idea because that immediately implied that they were immensely powerful events.”So powerful, they may have played a role in the evolution of life on Earth and on other planets throughout the cosmos.”If a gamma ray burst occurred within a few thousand light years of Earth, it would strip the atmosphere off,” Gehrels said. While the possibility of such a nearby detonation is extremely small, “it may have happened once during the time that there was life on Earth, perhaps not.””But it is still a very interesting question because whenever a gamma ray burst goes off, there are presumably stars with planets around it and those planets do have the atmosphere stripped off,” he said. “And so we can think about how many planets there are with life on them and how long life lasts in the context of both asteroid extinctions and gamma ray bursts. So it is a factor in terms of life-forming planets.”Video coverage for subscribers only:VIDEO:DELTA ROCKET BLASTS OFF WITH SWIFT VIDEO:COCOA BEACH TRACKING CAMERA VIDEO OF LAUNCH VIDEO:CAMCORDER VIEW OF LAUNCH FROM CAPE PRESS SITE VIDEO:ONBOARD ROCKET CAMERA SHOWS NOSE CONE JETTISON VIDEO:ONBOARD ROCKET CAMERA SHOWS DEPLOYMENT OF SWIFT VIDEO:MOBILE SERVICE TOWER ROLLED BACK BEFORE DAWN VIDEO:SWIFT’S LAUNCH CAMPAIGN SHOWN WITH NARRATION VIDEO:ENTIRE ON-PAD ASSEMBLY OF ROCKET WITH NARRATION Gathering data to help scientists figure out what causes such unimaginable explosions is the goal of the Swift satellite, an international spacecraft equipped with three telescopes and computer software capable of spotting bursts and quickly repositioning the spacecraft to observe the afterglow before it fades from view. It’s that quick response that sets Swift apart from all earlier efforts to study gamma ray bursts. To appreciate the problem, consider Gehrels’ flashbulb analogy. Imagine sitting in a dark room, instruments at the ready, to study the light from flashbulbs popping off randomly around you. By the time you could aim your instruments in the direction of any given flash, it would have faded from view. But the appropriately named Swift is up to the challenge, equipped with six oversized, spinning reaction wheels that can be spun up or down on computer command to quickly reorient the spacecraft in time to observe the afterglow of a burst. The initial detection of a burst will be made by the wide-field Burst Alert Telescope, built by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Then, after the satellite has been reoriented, the afterglow will be studied in detail by the X-ray Telescope built by Penn State University, the University of Leicester and Italy’s Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera. The radiation also will be captured by the Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope, built by Penn State and the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Britain. The satellite itself was built by Spectrum Astro.”Swift is just the right tool needed to solve this mystery,” Gehrels said. “One of Swift’s instruments will detect the burst, while, within a minute, two higher-resolution telescopes will be swung around for an in-depth look. Meanwhile, Swift will ‘e-mail’ scientists and telescopes around the world to observe the burst in real-time.”Along with alerting large ground-based observatories and other space telescopes to an evolving burst, Swift’s own instruments will spectroscopically analyze the radiation to shed light on the processes that created it.One possibility is the collision of two ultra-dense neutron stars or a black hole and a neutron star. But the most compelling theory holds that bursts are generated when super massive stars run out of nuclear fuel and collapse to form black holes.”When black holes form, there’s a lot of mass, gas that falls down into the black hole and creates it,” Gehrels said. “That gravitational potential energy is the source of the energy that powers these gamma ray bursts in this model of black hole origin. So it’s gravitational energy that we’re collecting.”Of course, you think about black holes as just swallowing light and light can’t come out. But as the gas flows down into the black hole and creates it, it gets extremely hot and a significant (amount of radiation) is emitted. We don’t know exactly how that would come out, shooting out as gamma rays, but that’s one of the things we want to learn with Swift.”Stars maintain their equilibrium by balancing the inward pull of gravity with the outward pressure of thermal radiation produced by nuclear fusion in the core. When the fuel in a star’s core is exhausted, gravity dominates and the core contracts. Eventually, the pressure in the core or surrounding layers becomes so extreme that heavier elements begin fusing and equilibrium is briefly restored. What happens after that depends on the star’s original mass. When average-size stars like the sun finally exhaust their fuel, fusion stops and they contract to a point where quantum mechanical effects prevent further collapse. But the density in the core is not high enough to support continued fusion. The result is a slowly cooling white dwarf. For more massive stars, those quantum effects cannot offset gravity and the collapse continues until protons and electrons are crushed together and yet another quantum effect kicks in to prevent further contraction The result is an ultra-dense, ultra-compact neutron star. But for super massive stars, even those atomic forces are not enough to stop gravity. The result in those cases, astronomers believe, is a black hole, a so-called singularity that effectively vanishes from the known universe.”The black hole is actually formed in a very short collapse,” Gehrels said. “And at that same time that it’s being formed, the gamma rays come out. It’s almost simultaneous. But essentially, the black hole’s first and then the gamma rays are shooting out.”Super massive stars burn their nuclear fuel much faster than smaller stars like the sun and many of the gamma ray bursts observed to date occurred in the remote past among the first generations of stars to form after the big bang.”Gamma ray bursts happen throughout the universe,” Gehrels said. “And the reason we’re seeing them at these great distances is because the average galaxy is billions of light years distant from us. Early in the universe, there may have been more massive stars forming. The purported population 3 stars that scientists think formed (early), those could have produced larger gamma ray bursts or a higher fraction of those stars may have made gamma ray bursts. But we don’t really know for sure.”There may have been more in the early universe than there are now. But in general, any place where there’s star formation going on, even in this epoch in galaxies nearby us, you can produce massive stars and make gamma ray bursts. So this happens throughout the universe.”Swift’s launch originally was scheduled for October, but the flight was delayed in the wake of three hurricanes that blew through Florida and by a longer-than-expected campaign to launch a Delta navigation satellite from an adjacent pad. Launch this week slipped three more days because of trouble with the rocket’s self-destruct system. Liftoff today came six minutes late because of minor countdown snags.Ares 1-X PatchThe official embroidered patch for the Ares 1-X rocket test flight, is available for purchase.Apollo CollageThis beautiful one piece set features the Apollo program emblem surrounded by the individual mission logos.Expedition 21The official embroidered patch for the International Space Station Expedition 21 crew is now available from our stores.Hubble PatchThe official embroidered patch for mission STS-125, the space shuttle’s last planned service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, is available for purchase. | | | | 2014 Spaceflight Now Inc.Falcon 9 countdown timelineSPACEFLIGHT NOW
