Tyrese On His Music : “The mic is a vagina.” + His Relationship with Taraji P. Henson

Yesterday, Tyrese sat down for an interview with the Breakfast Club Radio Show crew. They comically harassed him about his (strictly platonic, according to him) relationship with actress Taraji P. Henson. He says that he loves her as a friend but all that on-screen chemistry we’ve seen between the two is just friendly… Besides questions about Taraji, they also asked him about his music, new book, movies and his personal love life. Peep the quotes.

On Women Inspiring His New Music:

“I haven’t worked on music since I was married and then divorced. So I had all of this stuff bottled up inside. So there is the randomness of just wildin out and partying again, and bringing all that energy. I had at least 12 girls in the studio every night because I do this music for the ladies. I gotta have the right environment. I’m doing this music for them so I’m watching their body movements, I’m studying. And the mic is a vagina. That’s what it is to me. The mic is a vagina because the ladies will not hear the music until you get on the mic to sing it. So you gotta do your thing and zone out and make believe that this is a woman. The girls that would come by were homegirls and friends. It wasn’t like an orgy or nothin.”

On His Book New Book “Manology” with Rev Run:

“We had 10 meetings yesterday. And all 10 major book publishers here in New York are now bidding, full-on, for this “Manology” book from me and Rev Run. We’re going to be giving women information on how we think, how we deal with us. It’s gonna have elements of [a Steve Harvey type book] but our interpretation of that. I don’t want to get all heavy on y’all, but I also want to touch on how I feel. One chapter I wrote in the book is called “Validation is A Man’s Silent Killer.” Especially being a hood dude, born and raised, I feel like there’s a lotta cats in jail right now doing 25 to life because they went out of their way to prove how much crazier they are, how much harder they are on the block, how fast they’re willing to pull the trigger, the biggest dope game, the biggest weed game, how many chicks they running through compared to somebody else. So it’s all about poking they’re chest out and being that dude on the block then they end up doing 25 to life because they’re trying to impress the dudes on the block. And then when they’re in jail nobody puts money on their books, nobody writes them a letter, not even willing to take their collect calls, and let alone come down on that bus for a visit. Most of their homies got a criminal record so they aint gonna let them in the prison anyway. So these dudes are in prison like ‘I did all this work for the block and the block aint there for me.’ But then when they get out the homies on the block are happy to see them. So it’s all about validation.”

On The Mistakes His Ex-Wife Made:

“I was disappointed in my ex-wife because she would ask me to stop doing this, acting like this, going about this, hanging out with this, whatever the case may be. And if I decided to make those adjustments she never validated me and made me feel good about doing whatever she asked me to do. You’re waiting for your girl to make you feel good about making these adjustments but she doesn’t.”

On Movies “Fast and Furious #6” & “The Life Story of Teddy Pendergrass”:

“We’re shooting it in April supposedly. And yesterday I just locked up the life rights to the life story of Teddy Pendergrass. I’m very happy about that. [I shadowed him for a long time]. There’s footage of us hanging out throughout Philadelphia. He had actually took me to the location where the car accident happened that led to him being in the wheelchair. [He also has an autobiography out.] So we locked up the life rights to the book and the movie.”

(FYI…I’m sure you know this, but Pendergrass was an R&B singer in the 1970s, who got into a car crash in 1982. He was paralyzed from the waist down.)

Tyrese’s album, “Open Invitation,” will officially come out on November 1st. Here’s the interview footage.
