Tami Roman Blames Production For Negative Image Of ‘Basketball Wives’

Reality stars Tamia and Star Jones have recently called out reality shows like ‘Basketball Wives‘ for being “unrealistic” and spreading negative images of African American women. One of the ‘Basketball Wives’ personalities, Tami Roman, recognizes that the show leaves a negative impression, but she doesn’t think that she and her co-stars should be, personally, blamed for what the producers decide to air. During an interview with Sister 2 Sister, Tami explained why those behind-the-scenes are really to blame.
On if ‘Basketball Wives’ should be canceled because of the violence and negativity:
“I think that the opposition to call for the show to be canceled will end the employment of several African-American women who have no creative control. Why not call out the people who make the decisions about what is aired? Call out Shed Media. Call out VH1 because I will join that battle. Why call for several people to be unemployed that really have nothing to do with the creative process?”
On the cast’s positive moments not airing:
“I come with my storyline and things that I want to introduce and lo and behold what they want to show are those dramatic moments. There is more to us.”

On taking responsibility for her actions during filming:
“What they are seeing is a part of my personality. I’m not trying to take back my actions, but that’s not who I am all the time. I wasn’t happy with the situation with Meeka [Claxton] and myself. We might not ever like each other, but it didn’t have to come to that. That made me ask, ‘Tami, why are you so mean to people?’ Tami had to become real with things she hasn’t dealt with, and so I chose to deal with them this season.”
On how she feels about cast mates, like Evelyn Lozada:
“We show our flaws. We learn and develop as individuals. I can’t judge Evelyn [Lozada]. She has to work toward change. People don’t give us the benefit of the doubt or take that into consideration. Did Evelyn need to run over the table? Maybe not. Did Nia have to go over and slap Jennifer? Maybe not. I still don’t believe that warrants this big all-out movement against women who are really just showing our lives.”
What do you think? Would you still watch without the entertaining drama? And who’s really to blame — the cast or those responsible for the show?

I feel as though characters such as Tami and Evelyn want that extra attention, improve the ratings and want to be the star of the show by acting crazy, violent and dramatic. I understand that we only see a percentage of what these women really are but truth be told its still their actions. Basketball wives hasn’t shown any growth or positivity with some of these women and it does look like a group of high school teenage girls that are about nothing but drama.
This is a crock of BS.
I agree Chantell, they always play the blame game when they get called on their sh#!
I 100% agree with you also, they never want anyone to call them on the carpet but they always think that someone should answer to them, how hypocritical they are, even Shawnie for sitting back allowing them to trash her show? She acts like she don’t know what right looks like because she sits back and say nothing WIMP!!!! Over this show.
I’ve only seen this show a few times. But seriously who is a basketball wife? Are any of them still with the a bball star? I seriously doubt the wedding of Evelyn and Chad will go through. He’s making money off her and the show and I bet will dump her or sign a iron clad pre-nup. (If he’s smart)
all ready did
What I find interesting is that you don’t see Shawnie involved in anything. Is it me or do she stand clear and let things unfold negativly? SHe’s one of the producers and yet she allows the media to show our AAW as beasts. Why is that? I understand we as women have to stick together but if you can’t uplift someone, why tear them down? That’s what this show is doing, tearing our AAW down. IJS
Oh Aint nobody bout to start no drama with Shaunie.. Not umless they want to be unemployed.
that is an image they shouldnt put on here it looks like the are the kind of people that need attion alil bit more than ours
I too feel as though Tami and Evelyn want/need the extra attention. Characters is right! It’s all about the ratings and who wants to be the star of the show by acting crazy, violent and dramatic along with immaturity. I guess that is the reason why they are all ex’s!!! LOL. I understand that we only see a percentage but truth be told I guess it’s immaturity that pays their bills. The show should be called Ex-Basketball Wives/Fiance’s or whatever. It’s a shame that it it a couple of women that make the show look bad. I do commend Jen on keeping her composure. Hit them in their pockets Jen–perhaps then they will begin to act like adult women. Don’t know much about Tammi but Evelyn just recently became “wanna be bold” because of the show. Growing up she was a straight up chicken head jumping in and out of cars—and most definitely never a tough girl..LOL. Still trying to figure out who is she trying to impress!!!
Tami needs more people. When will these folks hold themselves responsible for their ignorant actions. Tami is mid 40s and fighting people. That is beyond comprehension for me. The fact that these women do not know how to deal with differences without violence shows me they lack any kind of tact and class. Very uncouth and ratchett. Also, I’m not blaming VH1 because they are only taping what you give them.
This is my question? Why do you care. Half of you all will act the same way if placed in the same situations. Everyone wants to act all high and mighty on these blogs, but if giving the right opportunity will accept a role on REALITY TV and show their ass. If you feel the show is degrading to AAW then don’t watch. O I forgot yall love the drama, if not you all would not have anything to do on Tuesday morning when you wake up (blog). I wonder what the profession is of some of these holier than though individuals who are so offended by actions portrayed on television. This country dealing with epic issues by the day, but boycotting reality tv seems to be important. You people need to pay attention to real world problems and let reality tv be what it is reality tv. If you don’t like it don’t watch it
I just want to say that NO, if I were offered an opportunity to do reality tv I absolutely would NOT show my ass out of respect for myself, my child, my family, etc. Evelyn would be a star for her sexy and her sass. She doesn’t need to fight people every episode to be popular. It does matter. AAW have been agains the degredation of ourselves for some time now. People boycotting the show is no different than people boycotting some rap music. And just because there are major issues in this world doesn’t make THIS issue less important. I see your point. But there must be a line drawn somewhere. Shows like this are teaching our girls that being angry is cute and gets you attention. This effects how are young girls see themselves and how people see us. I’m happy the conversation is happening. Even if the show remains on air it sends a message that this is NOT what we want to see. We love drama but we don’t love violence. Big difference.
Excellent points, Ms. Spivey. I use shows like this as a teaching moment for my teenage daughter so that she understands that this behavior screams of ghetto mentality and is definitely NOT lady like. It all goes to show that you can take the person out of the hood, but you can’t take the hood out of the person. This behavior is certainly NOT cute and grown/mature women do not act in this way.
I Agree with you Ms Spivey, even tho is was drama I always hoped each show would be different because I thought they would be tired of making themselves look a hot mess, I have friends that have already stop watching the show, for me I’m done also. There’s nothing wrong with wanting our sisters to carry themselves better then they represented themselves here.
Sorry but you are dead wrong. I have settled many matters in my life without popping off. A person could mess around and bring a knife to a gun fight. I was raised better and I do not have to act like a raving jackass to be heard or to get my point across. They are not acting real, they are acting real stupid and pointing fingers is BS. They were laughing at first, but now that the world is sick of it, they are trying to lay blame elsewhere. Now who is being a coward?
T commented “I understand that we only see a percentage but truth be told I guess it’s immaturity that pays their bills”, and she right. All Tami is worried about is being unemployed. Uhm, what the fuck were yall doin before the show? I love my Aunt Tami, but she need to have a gotdamn seat
The bad imagery this sends out will make it more difficult for decent black women to get self respect or be taken seriously. Unfortunately we are being judged by the worst in our race and it doesn’t get any worse than this.
Drinking, half naked, azz up in the air, fighting, cursing, throwing things in public, up on tables, uneducated, hair weave wearing, baby mamma-sex addicts. Poor examples of motherhood, totally narcissistic, money hungry gold-diggers, as if they can pretty-package garbage and sell it as gold.
Ratchet Shaunie sold the African American community out with this one. I saw an article on the Wall Street Journal about it and several other mainstream news outlets. This is a tear down of the African American female.
Like seriously look at that picture. This is a grown woman with a collage age daughter throwing a wine bottle across the room. What if that bottle would have hit that her????? And for her to be awarded with her own reality show further encourages this foolish behavior. It’s not cute. It’s dangerous and people don’t like it.
They just make women of Color look bad!
Tami and Evelyn have taking clowning to a brand new level and now that they are being called out for what they usually call “being real”, it is someone elses fault. That is BS, they went too far and they don’t even have common sense enough to be embarassesed. That is what makes it so sad. At this point, just hit the mute button and shut up, please!
i agree angela
The blame lies with Shaunie. I saw a clip where she wonders if people are silently thinking she’s ghetto. Hell yeah Shaunie! Your work product shows that you are. She is no different than the women, who are her friends, that are on the show. What it comes down to is the money…a spirit of whoredom!
