Q-Tip Slams Gwyneth Paltrow for Using N-Word, Calls Russell Simmons Out

Over the weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow hit Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Watch the Throne” show in Paris, with Kelly Rowland, Beyonce and The Dream. The three were spotted rockin’ all night in the front row. One of the more monumental moments of the show was Ye and Jay performing “N*ggas in Paris” 11 times. Apparently, Paltrow got caught up in the excitement and tweeted a photo stating,

Immediately, Paltrow received heat for using the word, but a few folk like producer The Dream, Russell Simmons and social commentator Toure, jumped to her defense. But there’s one person that ain’t really feeling Paltrow’s use of the word, nor is he fan of folk defending her. Wednesday afternoon, Q-Tip hopped on twitter, giving his two cents on Paltrow’s tweet. He wrote:
listen rush simmons, toure, and all Black folk who are sympathist to this gwen paltrow nigga thing….she may not have meant harm, sure it was in the heat of the moment but that fact that she showed not 1 IOTA of an apologetic tone….given the historical weight of that word is not responsible of G paltrow’s part…as powerful as hiphop is it DOESNT erase the years of damage that not only that word has done but circumstances that usually surrounded it…sure there is empathy for the black american struggle from all races but the empathy shld be extended to the great pain we as blacks…have experienced for generations. for the pain that we still deal with in our communities daily..was gwen wrong for recognizing unrelated people to the song as “niggas in paris for real”? debatable. BUT she SHLD have ….paltrow shld have offered a “if i offended anyone im truly sorry” as a person who loves black people and understands…there’s a scope of black folk that exist beyond the ones that she partied with in paris who are still dealing w the complexities of…their circumstances. black folks that dont know about giving a white person a “pass” … there is a lot to this thing. rush ? toure? its ok its all love brothas but lets build … later! and i got love for yall and im glad we can express our views! peace
What do you think of Q-Tip’s stance? Should Paltrow have apologized? Or should she receive a pass because she was using it within its proper context?

How is she using it in its “proper context”? The proper context of this derogatory racial slur would be how it was used by slavemasters to dehumanize and control the enslaved for CENTURIES. She’s actually using it as it should NEVER be used by anyone! Just because Jay-Z, Kanye, and many others of their professional ilk ignorantly push this derogatory racial slur because their “masters” PAY them extremely well to do so will NEVER make it right. These brothers are blind to the lack of empowerment their promoting while their “masters” not only gain exponentially financially but they also maintain the power that matters. Glad to see Q-Tip calling out Russell Simmons, Toure, and others. An interesting side note about Toure is that during an interaction with him, he freely uses the n-word but absolutely refused to use “kike,” which is a derogatory racial slur for Jews. Interesting mindset, eh!
LOVE this!!!
Finally, someone with common sense!! She didn’t just say the name of the song! She said “for real” like “them n!gga are in here for real yall”. Yeah she was crunk but should have used better judgement and at least apologized for it! Rus and The Dream and Toure backing her up, just gave her ammunition to continue to use it!
We cannot allow the struggle to be forgotten! I hate that song and new it was going to cause confusion.
I agree with BNWW-There is no “proper” context for a word that was used to move Rosa Parks out of her seat, to string up “strange fruit” Billie Holiday sung about, or to burn a church where little girls were preparing for their day. This N-word has no ‘proper context” yesterday, today, or tomorrow. It is however not totally GP who is at fault. Her actions were mearly a manifestation of those she was there to see and be entertained by. Q-tip bought up some good points, but let’s face it..He also uses the N-word and has a song called “Sucka N**%$&s and thus is part of the problem. We CANNOT ask folk to stop doing something if we (black folk) are not leading by example..The time for a change is therefore long overdue! http://www.theunitedvoices.org come help be apart of this change and we together can convert what is currently (open and free use and abuse of the N-word by everyone)…to what can be (The N-word No longer being used..or abused by anyone)
Black People we are no longer slaves, Our ancestors fought and died for us to be free from chains of slavery. Nigga does not bother me, I hear it said amongst my own people more than I have found any white person bold enough to say it to my face. I strongly doubt if gweneth is a racist, I would not apologize either if I have not done anything wrong… deep down inside she really wants to be a black woman. We have come so far and every time we allow this word to offend us it just sets us back 50 years. The definition of the word is simply a person of ignorance. So in the words of reality star Nene Leakes, “a hit dog will holler.” Change starts in the home, if we as a people find this word so offensive, we need to stop using it first, before we can demand anyone else to #my president is black
Well it obviously doesn’t bother you, so you sort of made no sense at the end of your comment.
Kennedy, I agree 100% with us needing to stop using it before demanding that of others.
We can’t expect to Gwyneth to know or acknowledge or plight or our issue with her using the word when all around her at that concert people were probably saying it like it was cool and accepted. It’s been made to seem like it’s OK to use the word — Hip Hop especially has made it seem like a cool thing, so the picking and choosing of when and who can say it is silly. And if it’s an issue of “us” being able to say it because “we” own it, why would we even want ownership over it?
