Sheryl Underwood Says Calling Black Hair Nappy, Beady Was ‘A Bad Choice Of Words’
Sheryl Underwood may be in a bit of trouble right now. Over the weekend, the 49-year-old show co-host,comedian, and actress made some controversial comments about black natural hair during an encore presentation of ‘The Talk.’ While discussing Heidi Klum’s revelation that she saves all of her son’s hair (her son is bi-racial) after cutting, Underwood stated:
Why would you save afro hair? You can’t weave afro hair. You never see us at the hair place going ‘Look, here, what I need here is, I need those curly, nappy beady…That just seems nasty.”
When co-host Sarah Gilbert added that she also saves her child’s hair, Underwood responded:
It’s probably some beautiful long, silky stuff.
So what’s the big deal? Her remarks set off a firestorm on Twitter with some calling her ‘coon’ and all sorts of not-so-nice names. What’s more? Black activists are demanding an public apology. Underwood spoke with blogger Curly Nikki to clear up her side explaining:
That was a bad choice of words. A bad juxtaposition of words to imply that our hair is not good. I made a mistake. I will own up to that mistake. I’m going to talk to God and change the way I articulate things and be more cognizant. I’m not perfect and I bet if you put a camera on someone all day, they’d eventually say something they’d regret too. I am asking you to forgive me for the statement I made, which to me, is a power only God has, really. I’m not what you think I am. I don’t have self-hate. I am not ashamed of my Blackness or who I am. In highschool I had a giant afro. In college I was militant. I loved my afro puff. My dad instilled Black pride in me. I have no hair shame whatsoever.
She continued:
I am going to make mistakes, because I’m human. And I’m sorry for what my words inferred, but it doesn’t call my Blackness into question. My Blackness comes out in other ways, subtle ways. On the show, when they refer to him as simply, ‘Obama’, I straighten them up and remind them that he ain’t your boy, he’s the president. President Obama. I’m learning lessons, and I cannot evolve if I’m not allowed to be empowering. There is a consequence to everything that you do and say. I understand why a part of my community was disappointed in the implication that Black, natural hair is bad and that White hair is good. I will be much more careful with everything I say. Please do not attack my colleagues, my family, my friends. I’m with ya’ll. I’m fighting for you everyday and despite making myself available on the radio show and on Twitter, I don’t feel like you’re letting me engage in a respectful conversation.

This disgusts me! She can apologize til she’s blue in the face. This is self-hatred at it’s finest…. and it’s really, really sad. The person she needs to work on is her.
I am sorry but Sheryl said absolutely nothing wrong. Taken in the context of the story she was talking about, yes it is nasty to keep some nappy, beady hair in a bag, which is what they were discussing Heidi Klum doing with her son. I am not cutting off my hair and keeping it in a bag, and I love my hair! Truth is… Our hair is nappy! i dont know why ppl try to dress it up as anything other than what it is. isnt self-love about stating whats real? We have some nappy hair! Textured, curly, kinky… all beautiful words for nappy. And where were these activists beforehand? That episode was definitely a repeat. Oh I guess no one cared when it originally aired. Give me a break.

Sheryl absolutely did something wrong, and it’s embarrassing, and hard to listen to a black woman refer to their own race’s hair as “nasty”. There are women walking around here with someone else’s hair on their head, but I guess because it’s straight it’s not considered nasty.
There is nothing inherently nasty about anyone’s well-groomed hair. And, keeping in context, there is no doubt that Ms. Underwood was referring specifically to “afro” hair as being nasty because…she said it! ALL hair is made up of the same proteins and amino acids. Textures are determined by genetic codes. There is nothing nasty about this process. There is only nasty…and vile…people who subscribe to such a level of self-loath.
I saved my son’s hair from his first hair cut. In fact I know a lot of women who do so. There is nothing nasty about a baby’s hair. I think what was offensive about her statement was to imply that black kinky/nappy hair is nasty and should be thrown out while straight/silky hair is worth saving. I think that is what was offensive to people. I our hair can be kinking/nappy but to imply that it’s nasty . . . that is a bit too much for me.
i’m trying to give Sheryl a “pass” b/c, at the end of the day, she is still a comedienne. But she has just seemed to me to try to do/say whatever she can to appeal more to the crossover audience. She is a female black republican- which I still believe she only became to set herself apart from other black people during the presidential elections.
My mo saved my little nappy hair in a bag from when I was a baby. Without a perm, my hair is nappy with a thick kitchen in the back! And im guessing whats under Sheryl’s weaves and wigs is some nappy Meek Mill braids :-)

I guess she was trying to be funny…However, once she used the word “nasty”–it became un-funny. There is nothing wrong with a parent saving hair whether it straight, fine, kinky, curly, etc…I also think about ethnic children who lose their hair because of a disease…if a wig is used, using the saved/donated “textured” hair may be a better fit than straight/fine hair. I think she mistakenly took it too far past the “fine” line of comedy.
