[VIDEO] Pilar Sanders Didn’t Realize She Was In An Abusive Relationship, Says She Was Isolated in Marriage
home–when they don’t get it, then uh, what they’re used to on the field comes home with them. With the isolation, the women are often not even aware their in an abusive situation, as was I.
She continues that they often have a sense of entitlement:
Well often times because people fall at their feet and bow when they walk by, they expect the same from you…
Pilar (who split with Deion in 2011 after 14 years of marriage) says that while players are aggressive on the field, they aren’t able to turn that switch off when they come home.
They never turn it off. It’s very much as I saw, on my home along with many of my friends — at any point of time they could blow their whistle. So they’re very irritable. They’re up and down.
Pilar admits she was disturbed of the video of Rice striking his then fiancee, Janay Palmer:
Well, to me what I saw was that it was something that they were very use to. He was so casual with doing it period –spitting on her, defaming her just disrespecting her in a very awful way….So if you’re doing that in public forum i can only imagine what hell she’s going through in her private home, behind closed doors isolated and alone.
As to why Janay may have defended her husband’s actions, Pilar says:
That’s expected. That’s a typical cycle of abuse of emotional abuse, mental abuse, physical abuse. It is a typical cycle of what all women and children go through and if they stand up, step outside of the norm of standing by your man, then she’s abused more. She’s locked out of money, she’s locked out of her home and even threatened with taking the children away, which my case, I was. Just that. As soon as you stand up and say something, all hell will break loose in your life. And that’s what they do.
