[INTERVIEW] Tiny & Shekinah Jo Talk ‘Weave Trip’, ‘Tiny Tonight’ Cancellation & What They Love Most About Their Friendship
If there’s one thing we can appreciate about true female friendship, it’s the fact that while it certainly has it’s lows, the highs make it worthwhile. One of our favorite friendships surround reality TV stars Tameka ‘Tiny’ Harris and Shekinah J. Most of us were introduced to the dynamic due on T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle. And now, they’ve returned with the VH1 spin-off, Tiny & Shekinah’s Weave Trip.
In exclusive interview with theJasmineBRAND.com, we chatted with them about ‘Weave Trip’; why ‘Tiny Tonight’ was cancelled; Shekinah’s love life and what type of man she needs (Tiny suggests a reserved white man); if there’s tension between T.I. and Shekinah; music and how Tiny REALLY feels about some suggesting she looks like Miss Piggy. Check out a few excerpts of our conversation.
Part 1
Part 2
theJasmineBRAND.com: What do you love most about your friendship?
Tiny: Well we been known each other, best friends, together ever since we’ve met. We haven’t like separated. We stay in touch, see each other through the weeks. I’d say six and a half years. We met through a mutual friend, Vanity. She just brought me around to meet her homegirl. She did Vanity’s hair, and from there…
Shekinah: I forget sometimes. We really met because I was at hair school. And I knew the girls in hair school and Tamika was opening up her nail shop.
Tiny: Oh that’s true, she came with me and we were looking up different hair schools and locations.
Shekinah: Locations, yes and really we were looking for the girls to get in there. Because I figured hell these girls out of hair school, they need a lil occupation. So we’d go around to the hair schools and get them to come that way. But my opinion, and I’m not being racist when I say this, but I told my friend that sometimes it’s not good to do business with our own.
Tiny: Well you know, I learned that the hard way. Even though I think that they did good work, I think that – mainly my problem was timing. We lack and we like to take too many vacations.
Shekinah: And breaks in between.
Tiny: Mother’s Day you don’t wanna work, you don’t wanna work on Father’s Day, and it was just like, c’mon now!
Shekinah: I think its a black thing!
Tiny: It’s definitely a black thing.
theJasmineBRAND.com: How did you’ll come up with a concept for that concept (‘Weave Trip’)?
Tiny: Well we kinda…she kinda came up with- just tell her, gon and tell your story.
Shekinah: I came up with the idea that we should have a weave truck, but to do her hair, not just to take around the world. I said it would be cute if we had a weave bus, shampoo bowl, dryer, this and that, and then she put her hand in on it, ‘Well I think this needs to go on here and that needs to go on there,’ and it just went from there. You can get everything you need in there, like a boss woman would have. I’m a boss and I got my own weave truck and when I’m pulling up I got my glam on here when I’m walking into my venue. It could be for that too, you know what I’m saying? Like on a bossy level.
Tiny: Initially we wanted to do a show like a “Simple Life” type show, and we came up with the weave bus, we felt like, sh-t, we wanted to do this anyway, Let’s take our bus on the road, and make it about getting our bus to LA. Basically, we wanted to get out there and do some things we never did before.
theJasmineBRAND.com: You’ve both done reality TV before. How was this experience different?
Shekinah: We work way harder.
Tiny: Yes.
Shekinah: “Family Hustle,” I mean we worked but we don’t work that hard.
Tiny: The hours were long and strenuous. We were working.
TheJasmineBrand.com- Now, I think I ‘discovered’ how hilarious Shekinah was on ‘Tiny Tonight’. What happened with that show?
