(Exclusive) Nicci Gilbert Reveals New Docu-Series ‘From The Bottom Up’
families, very serious repercussions from their decisions. This show is following them literally going from the top to the bottom and back to the top. Which is my life story for the past few years.
The Jasmine Brand: Who is apart of the cast?
I’m not the a part of the show. It’s Christine Beatty, she was at the center of the Mayor Kilpatrick controversy. Kim Smedley did time for illegal butt injections. Stacii Jae Johnson she [worked for Mayor Reed and was arrested with a] DUI. Chrystale Wilson from Players Club. Sara Stokes, from Making the Band, she just got out of jail.
The Jasmine Brand: Why did you decide to not be apart of the cast?
I think that in order for me to really focus on being a content person and being a really true activist, it didn’t work for me. I want to establish myself as a legitimate creater and producer. When you get caught up being on camera, no matter how you slice it, your abilities as a producer and executive are blurred. I think that was a big issue with Think Factory Media. They already know me as Nicci from Brownstone, the singer. For the last 10 years, I have been working to be involved behind the scenes. Do I think is there a future for me in front of the camera, absolutely, but for these next few projects, no interest in camera stuff.
The Jasmine Brand: What’s the biggest lesson you learned from R&B Divas that you’re taking with you
The biggest lesson would probably be to know your personal and trust the people that you work with.
How involved were you with From The Bottom Up?
I created the series and cast the series. Our production company put the reel together and we brought it to Flava Unit. Kind of like with R&B Divas, same situation, the same except I am a real partner with real input.
The show begins filming December of this year and is set to air in 2015. What are your potential thoughts on ‘From The Bottom Up’?
