(EXCLUSIVE) Beyonce Slams Background Singer’s Lawsuit
artist. During his time working with Collins he had given her a copy of his music to listen to.
However, he says it’s clear that Collins gave Beyonce a copy of his music to the pop star due to “XO” being stolen from him. He filed suit demanding $3 million in damages or all the profits Beyonce made from her song and live performances of the infringing song.
Then on April 17th, Beyonce fired back at the background singer’s lawsuit claiming his complaint is vague and ill-found. She explains that she is a internationally known singer who has won 17 Grammys and sold over 188 million albums.
In the court docs, she explains that the singer never says what the exact similarities are between the two songs. The pop star says she even had her legal team reach out and attempt to find out what parts of the song the man feels were stolen, but he was not able to provide meaningful answers.
Further, Beyonce states that a phrase such as “XO” cannot be copyrighted and therefore she did not infringe on the mans work. She also says that the background singers copyright doesn’t even cover the music he claims she stole.
She even tells the court to listen to the man’s song and compare it to hers, saying that if anyone was to listen to both they would find the two works don’t share any,
melodic content and there is no meaningful similarity in pitch series, rhythm or rhythmic patterns, melodic development or structure.
Also, she states, “the two songs are distinct from a thematic perspective” with the man’s song describing the narrator’s romantic and sexual feelings towards a new lover. His song features lyrics talking about being sexually aroused and wanting to love every inch of the lover’s body. Her song on the other hand, “celebration of love and life, emphasizing the importance of living in the present with a loved one “before our time has run out.”
Beyonce is demanding the $3 million dollar lawsuit be dismissed and the background singer be awarded nothing. See the exclusive court docs.
